They didn't know in 1987 that there would be dozens of them. Square was not doing well financially at the time, and Hironobu Sakaguchi was considering leaving the games industry. So if it hadn't been as successful as it was, it could have been his and Square's final game.

But mostly they wanted an F, and Fighting Fantasy was already taken by a series of choose-your-own-adventure books.
