As long as you have a non Mariko console you can modify it no matter how many updates they do doesnt matter. The only issue is you would have . Is to wait for the cfw to be updated if anything is changed.

"to play new releases"
Why play new releases right away? I presume they are not going anywhere in the coming few months, months in which people keep telling me amazing updates will happen and all can be had.

is there any benefits 4.1 has over 5.x?

no immediate ones. Its speculated that the 3.01-4.1 coldboot may ne possible similar to the same vein that 3.00 and under has exploits. If it ends up being found and worked on. 4.1 switches and under do not need to use a dongle every time you power on the switch. Of course, its talked about but no one known is currently working on it as its not a priority issue.

Just do it man. You're not getting locked out of anything that really matters and you'll be able to fully enjoy the device you bought.

I'm still unsure myself about whether to update from 4.1.0, but what exactly can 4.1.0 do (and possibly do) with current non-Mariko Switch that a fully updated non-Mariko Switch can do that's important? Is it really just coldboot/softmod? Other than that, is all functionality and access possible on fully-updated systems? I generally leave my Switch in sleep mode while docked so it never drains, thereby never requiring a coldboot when unattended. Even if it did drain or I had to do a full shutdown and bootup, I have the SX Pro ordered, and when I get that, I'd have access to the system that would simply need to use that on boot, right? Then operate as normal without the jig/dongle? As it is right now, I've had to pass on playing online with friends because I have not updated, and it sucks. I certainly have the money to buy another Switch, but I've never owned a second of a system within the same generation before with the exception of going from old 3DS to new 3DS, as that added faster processing and other features.

My main concern about all of this is whether the use of these hacks (using old firmware or new) can be detected by Nintendo. I certainly don't want to get hit by a banhammer. I've never played any game that was leaked prior to its release, let alone that same scenario AND going online with it. Other than homebrew, emulators, save backup, etc, there is one thing I'd like to do with the hacks, and that is to backup my physical games and play them on my system so I won't have to "switch" carts. I like the convenience of digital in this regard, but the savings to be had with buying physical right now (with what remains of my GCU discount until next year) and the physical ownership in cart form is just better imo.

Isn’t 4.1.0 the last version that could get a softmod? How much is the Xecuter SX?

$45 tops and you can fully enjoy what your console has to offer right now.

I did it and should have done before, but so many people on a fence and the false impression I had that I'd be locked out of piracy made me stall.

So happy to have a reason to turn my switch on again.

This might help you decide.

One thing to note about the softmod for 3.0.1-4.1 is because it has never been released, we don't know if it has been patched out or not. No software vulnerabilities have been tested on 5.X yet so its possible that the one for 3.0.1-4.1 still works in 5.X. The problem becomes whether or not its patched. If it is patched, the devs will most likely release it immediately as there is no point in holding onto a dead exploit. But if its not, its anyones guess how long they will hold on it. That is why no one can say for certain when that exploit will see the light of day. Personally, I don't mind waiting as even using a jig has the potential to damage your Switch but don't let that dissuade you from updating since all firmwares are exploitable.

Personally I won’t be playing online. I’m not a fan of online play anyway. Ordered an SX pro but I still want to be able to access the e shop and buy games so my switch is going to stay offline for a while up until we know for a fact that there are trusted ways of using CFW and OFW (online) with little to no ban risk. I’ve updated to 5.1.0, downloaded a few e shop only games, updated my Xenoblade 2 and I’ll be chilling there for a little while I think

Well personally I don't think I will be willing to pay for sub par online services plus with modding I can backup all my precious saves so softmod is the best option for me. I am more concern whether if softmod will result in a banned that blocks access to future firmware/game updates since they are required for newer games.

Most games have great local multiplayer too, I personally feel that it is more fun to play with friends and family instead of random players on the net.

That is a good point. Exploits are generally held onto until a newer firmware prevents their use.

It probably is the last version, and while I'm still unsure about updating, a question does need to be asked, not just for you but myself and others as well. How often does one feel they would need to make use of the softmod? Heck, wouldn't the softmod method require more steps than what we are doing with existing methods, including the SX Pro? Are the modifications, softmod or otherwise, are retained even through sleep mode, yes?

I have to admit I’m still unsure what to do I can’t afford to buy another switch I have already got a jig but youngest likes playing Mario kart and Splatoon and other is loving having fortnite but with me being old I was so wanting vc but as that’s not happening emu is gonna be the way to go for me but don’t wanna get banned :-(

People still play Splatoon 2?

Yes, and even more tomorrow because of a big DLC coming out tomorrow.

You made a very fair point and thanks to this message made me look at things differently! Thanks!

I doubt you would get banned. You would only get banned if you were to do unwanted stuff, or cheat online.

With the Octo Expansion coming tomorrow, and Fortnite already on the eShop it's been a hard month to wether stay or update in order to play new releases. What do you think of this, and how you feel about it?
softmod all the way baby.

Format your console, update and enjoy getting free games and demos from the eShop. You will still be able to use a jig to get homebrew access. Some homebrew software also only really works on 5.1.0.

If you don't want to risk being banned, don't use any homebrew software for now (wait for emu-eMMC).

NOTE: after the update, any old eMMC backups will become useless. You won't be able to revert to 4.1.0.

It wasn't supposed to be a question. I wanted to see what YOU might feel about this.
Ignore Jakkal, he's literally on these forums to bully people. I would upgrade. Most of the homebrew stuff is coming out for 5.0.2+ and hekate sleep mode is fixed. You're golden! Upgrade my man!

If I am being honest Nintendo's online games haven't exactly wowed me to where I would choose them over a modded system. I am not the biggest online player to begin with though. I have a PS4 pro with PS+. So if I need an online fix I will probably go there. If they started putting online modes on all their coop Mario, Yoshi, Donkey Kong and Kirby games then that would be something, but Nintendo doesn't even do that. As of now I am missing out on Mario Kart, Smash and Splatoon. And I never really play Smash or Mario Kart online anyways. Never did much online for the Pokemon 3DS games and mainly played single player.

The thing that would really hurt is a Mario Maker 2 release. That would be the one game I would really hate to miss out on. Mario Maker which isn't even announced yet and Splatoon 2 is not enough for me to not try to softmod my system.
