This is a guess

The storage in the chip can only store 10 save file(possibly just several MB of space)
Maybe the limitation will be removed in the next update when they figure out how to store the save file in the sd card
R5sdhc, 3ky3ds, and k3ds(I think they just release today) are all having the 10 upper limit

Well yeah, they're obviously built by the same people. They use brand diversity to help monopolize the market.

That sounds like something that could have been resolved while this thing was in production, they could have designed a chip with larger storage. The SKY3DS clones are just ... clones.

*IF* its a hardware limitation, then its a financial one at the same time.
Different hardware would've allowed them to store more at the same time, but would've made the card more expensive.

Ofcourse, if thats the case and the games as played on this card are indeed indistinguishable from regular games because of the way its done.
That also means that Gateway's (or any similar) probably can't employ the workaround.
However we simply don't know what it is and how they did it yet.

There's a lot of guesswork and assumptions - not as much backed up finds yet.
Which will be around soon enough.

they already stated if you format your SD you loose your saves, so the saves are on the SD...i think people should just stop trying to justify it

This.

This is just a guess, but I'm assuming a small portion of each game's data is written to the internal card enabling each game to load (like a relocation file or something), and the card is either not large enough to hold any more than 10 sets of this data, or the firmware on the card was only programmed to read 10 different sets of data. We already know that the card that holds the info isn't erasable currently. Perhaps this information is locked in an attempt to prevent Nintendo from being able to block the card by wiping the card of the info that enables the games to load from the Micro SD?

I'm very interested in seeing exactly how it works in the near future.

well from the images already shared it seems to be a FPGA, a flash chip and most likely some sort of memory controller, so i don't see any ROM chips, either the "logging" happens to the flash chip in which case they could of easily over wrote it, or it logs itself into the FPGA's internal memory.....which also should of been fairly easy to wipe.......unless they simply didn't want to make it erasable so they can sell more cards

The third option being that the exploit/workaround they are using requires it to not be erasable - that that is the entire thing that makes it work and makes it function like a retail card.

Meaning that in terms of hardware its possible, but to fool the system its not.
For that same reason they would've put the button on, allowing you to store more games - but have the device only recognize one at a time.
(Something that stores more at once, would need to be more expensive, making the card even more expensive if they want to retain their profit margin.)

Like how a revolver only has space for so many bullets at once - sure they could've made it bigger, but its not always as practical.

For now, we don't know for certain. While I'm with you that its probable they did it for money as most things on the hardware side seem to imply that its POSSIBLE to overwrite it.
I'm sure that someone will come forth with a more in-depth theory or conclusion after testing though.

How the hell does that work?
Making it look like there are more cards out there, as if there is an option.
For the same reason there are sister or daughter companies in other industries that release off-brand versions of their main product.

You reach a wider audience, but all the money flows into the same pockets.

It's the inability to change the 10 games that makes me feel it's purely profit driven. But the device is also almost nothing but a pure piracy machine, and at it's high price it's not even a very good deal. If I lived somewhere that access to 3DS game cartridges to purchase was limited, or even prohibitively expensive due to tariffs or even just high shipping costs I might consider it depending upon the upfront cost. But being that I don't, I see absolutely no reason to personally get the card, because the only thing I really care about would be homebrew anyway.

That... still doesn't make sense. If there are various options people will choose different options. If there is only one option, the same people will choose the one option.

Nah, if there's only one option, a lot of people will wait for competition to show up and offer a more competative price.

Just look on these boards, how many are waiting for another to clone the card or copy the technique? All because they don't want to pay the higher price (and the 10-game-limit)

its a old practice if you can flood a market with the same products but under different names you can sort of trick people into accepting limitations by making it seem like its a general limitation that is common amongst competitors too, it also means your one product is listed x amount of times per site instead of just once so when people are looking for a product they are more likely to choose yours as its there more often

its exactly the same thing with r4 gold deluxe,3dslink and orange 3ds....its just a way to funnel as many people to your product and get more exposure from people debating which card is best...when really people are buying the same thing with a different sticker

Notice it comes empty and it doesn't demand you to have 10 games installed in order to run.
Also that game-identifying data is written when you add a new game.
If they actually needed this limit and didn't want to sell more cards, they could add a 'reset' function to their software, so 10 new games could be added.

If I were to buy a flashcart for $100 I'd fucking hope that damn thing would play more than 10 games without making me lose them. What a scam this is and yet there's people defending this bullshit.

They're obviously pushing the "10 games only" to make dumbasses buy another flashcart from them.

The problem is that they seem to use one-time programmable chip, which doesn't allow you to erase and put in another game once you reached the limit.

yall im torn... ive been hacking away at tales of phantasia GBA (the USA version) and have so many documents of reverse engineering i've done
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I just found out that the EU version is better in literally every way, better sound quality, better lighting, and there's even a patch someone made to make the text look nicer
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
Do I restart now using what i've learned on the EU version since it's a better overall experience? or do I continue with the US version since that is what ive been using, and if someone decides to play my hack, it would most likely be that version?
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
@TwoSpikedHands, I'll preface this with the fact that I know nothing about the game, but, I think it depends on what your goals are. Are you trying to make a definitive version of the game? You may want to refocus your efforts on the EU version then. Or, are you trying to make a better US version? In which case, the only way to make a better US version is to keep on plugging away at that one ;)
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
I'm not familiar with the technicalities of the differences between the two versions, but I'm wondering if at least some of those differences are things that you could port over to the US version in your patch without having to include copyrighted assets from the EU version
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
@Sicklyboy I am wanting to fully change the game and bend it to my will lol. I would like to eventually have the ability to add more characters, enemies, even have a completely different story if i wanted. I already have the ability to change the tilemaps in the US version, so I can basically make my own map and warp to it in game - so I'm pretty far into it!
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I really would like to make a hack that I would enjoy playing, and maybe other people would too. swapping to the EU version would also mean my US friends could not legally play it
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I am definitely considering porting over some of the EU features without using the actual ROM itself, tbh that would probably be the best way to go about it... but i'm sad that the voice acting is so.... not good on the US version. May not be a way around that though
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
    I appreciate the insight!
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
@TwoSpikedHands just switch, all the knowledge you learned still applies and most of the code and assets should be the same anyway
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
    and realistically they wouldn't

be able to play it legally anyway since they need a ROM and they probably don't have the means to dump it themselves
