Hacking Text not showing up

So, i got my friend an acekard, and hes not really good with technology (he doesnt know how (and what i mean by when i say) to update his firmware. So a little while ago, he tells me that theres not text in the games and everything else, and im going over to his house on friday for a party and imma try to fix it. Its probably just him being stupid, but on the off chance that hes not just being stupid, what should i do?

Backup the games, format the sd-card and put a fresh firmware and the games back.
Sounds to me like the files has become corrupted (my DSTWO has done this exact same thing (or well, the sd-card inside))
