Just over a week ago, team Xecuter announced that they are working on a soon-to-be-revealed modchip for the Nintendo Switch. This was big news because modchip devices are usually used to circumvent anti-piracy measures on many digital platforms, but mainly gaming systems, and to see one already in the works for a machine that is only 10 months old is very rare.

Since then the team have been quiet, no one knows what the device will look like, how it will work, or when they can get their hands on one - but GBAtemp can exclusively reveal today that there will be BOTH a solder AND solderless option of team Xecuter's Nintendo Switch modchip.

Here is a direct quote from team Xecuter:

For now, I can tell you there is a solder and solderless version. We have quite a lot in the works, you will have more info soon.

The difference in pricing should be interesting in the two versions of the device, but at least you can now rest safely, knowing that the team will be providing options for whatever the Xecuter Switch modchip turns out to be.

I know, but the point still stands, somehow, I'd screw up and ruin the motherboard; I can't run that risk.

I get ya, buddy.
I suck real bad at soldering, like, I end up with blobs of solder in normal electronic connections made in schools.
But thankfully there is a solderless version.

Whether or not the solderless version ends up relatively within the same price as solder-one or in taking the same space as that one, it remains to be seen, but still a great user-friendly way nonetheless.

Last I knew he was still around last week, but only replies to those that "know" how much work tiny soldering is.
All I gotta say is, bravo TX for trying to narrow down the market and gain profit even on the installation process over those seeking profit from their own product.

It sounds like there are plenty of people that might be looking for a nice soldered mod but maybe lack the tools, time or talent to do it themselves and thus get to pay someone else.

Also how is it an outrageous price?

The soldering isn't so much a question of being able to do the actual act of soldering, but rather doing it well. It's not conceptually difficult to understand, I don't think that's what any of these folks are saying. I don't think switch hardmods are the hill to die on for those who don't have enough hours practiced in soldering. Therefore, a solderless solution provides less risk to the less practiced/less confident. Nothing wrong with that!

To veer back onto topic a bit, I'm very dubious of the claim that the solderless solution will be some kind of dongle or dock modification. That's not really a viable entry point without prior hax done on the software side of things, which isn't necessarily impossible, but is also not likely given what we know about TX's claims about what this thing is going to do, not IMO at least.

I agree.. it is not going to be a dock or a dongle. You WILL have to open the switch for the solderless solution.

It's outrageous if the soldering ends up costing way more than the actual modchip.
And taking into consideration the prices of previous TX modchips, $100 is 2x if not 3x the price of the chip.

Would take longer than 3 minutes to disassemble the switch. No it isn't worth $100. Many moons ago people quite happily paid that for a modchip install though. In saying that if my memory serves correctly I was US$40-50 for a xbox orig mod installed, but charged closer to US$110 for a ps2 mod chip. (this was below the going rates at the time). The original Xbox mod could me made for around $5, the PS2 I think were costing me around $20. AU to US conversion rates were a lot different back then so double that price in AUD$. Nobody thought twice at the prices.

I will add back then it was an extremely specialised field, people didn't have youtube to teach them how to solder, I'd worked for a Radio Tech for a few years so I had a pretty good understanding. Again, back then there was probably less repair work after Joe Blow tried to install a mod himself in his US$350+ console.

On top of that, tiny solder man has given a rate without any insight into the install difficulty. And also charging more than 360s RGH installs(the most difficult since the original PS2 mods imo)
