The biggest update in Team Fortress 2’s history is about to go live, letting players pay real money for in-game items. The Mann-conomy Update adds 17 new community-designed items, and the players who created them will receive a percentage of the takings from their sales. Item trading has also been added, along with item customisation systems for you to rename and recolour your kit. There’s a new dueling mini-game, crates of mystery items to be found and unlocked, and special item sets that give you major bonuses for wearing them all at once. [/p]

    Warning: Spoilers inside!

Is this why /v/ has been a fucking mess? You can buy hats with real money?

I really hate the "kids with their parent's debit cards have an advantage against people that just play" shit, so I'm glad to see items you can only buy are just cosmetic.

Unfortunately that isn't fully the case here. For some reason Valve broke their own rule of never giving a cosmetic item a gameplay changing effect when they introduced sets of weapons in this update. In able to use a set you need the weapons (easy to get) and the corresponding hats (pretty much impossible to find unless you're lucky as hell).

Luckily enough the effects of these sets are pretty bad, but it's rather disturbing that you need hats to use the effects of a set.

Quite a bit of the time the bonus effects are completely negated by the downsides of the items in the set anyways - Being a Sniper on 2fort while being headshot-proof would be great, except you can't headshot people yourself. And even then, I'm pretty sure hats go well above the $5 limits most items seem to have, and the cheapest you can buy an entire Polycount set is the same price as the game itself anyways.

Honestly, I'm not a huge fan of the idea, although I can see where it might be useful if I had a couple spare bucks in PayPal and there was a new item I really really wanted to try out. But the amount of people who are calling Valve sellouts or 'worse than Activision' is unbelievable, and apparently some of them aren't actually trolling. I've seen people shut down their servers and uninstall the game because of this, and it entirely blows my mind that people would be that butthurt over this update.

I think they added this update so at least Valve can still earn from the game even with just a little $$$$$
