Is it safe to update a 3ds on custom firmware? I’ve been playing Ultra Sun and want to redeem a mystery gift but I need to do a system update.

What version of Luma are you running? You can check by holding down Select while turning on the console

If you're running Luma 7.0.5 or older, you'll need to upgrade to B9S first. https://3ds.hacks.guide/a9lh-to-b9s.html

    Yep. Totally safe.
Just delete the tickets with this steps:
    1. Open FBI
    2. Go to the Tickets option
    3. Press A
    4. Select Delete Unused Tickets
    5. Profit
And if you have a problem with an update (mostly error codes like 009-xxxx or so), follow this:
    1. Open FBI
    2. Go to the Tickets option
    3. With that key site or this page search for the title ID of the update
    4. Select the ticket to delete
    5. Delete
