First off if this has been answered already (already did a search) please move to proper section or provide link

Im new to the switch modding. I have my switch on 6.2 with sx os installed, all is good can install nsp and play xci files off of the sd card. heres where im confused. If i attach a usb external HDD does it need to be directly attached to the usb-c port on the switch or can the switch dock read an external from one of the 3 usb ports. I would like clarification on this because Ive been reading through the manual and it does not specify. I would love to use one of the 3 usb's on the dock so i can play on the tv and not be limited to handheld.

Thank you inadvance

It reads from the Dock or directly from the switch (in portable mode) your call.
I personally have a 1tb drive in my Dock and all works fine with a y cable

The dock is just acting as a USB hub and SlimPort/MyDP adapter so essentially its the same thing as connecting a USB hub with an OTG cable directly to the Switch.

The only thing that won't work connected to the dock is RCM dongles because that requires the dongle to act as the host, and that won't work through a USB hub.

Otherwise, dock, hub or OTG cable are all the same.

Can you plug in two USB HD to the dock (example 2tb + 2tb)?

And what's the max capacity a switch can read 8tb?

I'm not 100% certain but I think that only 1 USB HDD can be detected at a time (sure I read it somewhere on here).

And what's the max capacity a switch can read 8tb?

not so much based on the max. capacity (again, think I read someone using an 8TB powered drive) but the disk format has to be exfat (don't go there!!!) or FAT32 (4GB maximum file size).

here is another thread discussing capacity - one guy is using a 12TB USB HDD in a dock. https://gbatemp.net/threads/biggest-usb-drive-that-is-connected-with-sx-os.524813/

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

Why not? exfat corruption happens only while saving data. But USBHDD is read-only, so nothing is going to be corrupted.

maybe I'm overly cautious, but I formatted my HDD FAT32 from the start, I don't know if the xci file is locked while in use and if the switch is put into hibernation mode or the usb hdd powers down I was concerned it might corrupt the file table, which with exfat is pretty much lose everything.. format and copy it all back on again.

ok this thread - https://gbatemp.net/threads/external-hard-drive-for-sx-os.522125/ - mentions both exfat and fat32 partitions are supported and larger than 2TB USB HDD support was in alpha 2.2.1 (which I doubt anyone is still using)

not sure why but been fiddling with this for about 2 weeks now and it will not read any hdd through the dock. have tried several different brands. (seagate, western digital, pny) all around 500gb and still nothing. they work great with otg but i dont want handheld as its not convenient for parties.

P.s. they are all exFat

Are you using a Y-cable with them? Or are they powered via an AC adapter directly?

A y cable is not necessary at least in my case I'm just using one cable (not plugged in either) and it works fine. Second hdd I've used that didn't need one and both worked.

I mean, some work. But it's a try and fail test.

He could test using Y cables if he hasn't yet. If he has and it doesn't work, well, I don't have anything else to recommend.
