Yes they can ban you, I highly recommend to not play online and use airplane mode

Can we just get a header stickied that says "If you alter your system in ANY way, you run the risk of being banned" in giant red letters?

If you don't want to be banned or at risk of being banned then buy a second switch and leave the modified one in airplane mode or don't mess with anything at all. It's that simple.
