Doh so it does..........I couldn't have been holding the button in long enough.
All that exercise getting up to wake it for nothing

I didn't know this either. How long do you hold the button? I can't get it to wake.

Hold down the Home Button for several seconds and it'll boot up.

It just would not wake but after resyncing it I can wake the system now. Not sure what was wrong but glad I can boot from pro controller now.

That's the thing I would like to be able to actually turn it on and off when docked like when it's in handheld mode, I us the sleep mode but I would prefer a full shutdown when the system is out of use for extensive periods.

If it's anything like the Shield TV, sleep mode is preferable to complete shut down. Draws next to no power and resumes in like 2-3 seconds with button press. Power down is available in handheld mode, obviously, but in docked mode it really doesn't matter...they probably did it to allow for background downloads. When docked the battery isn't in use at all once full. Power bypasses it straight to the main unit.
