There's a lot of chatter these days about the Japanese gaming industry. Its global market share and prestige has fallen precipitously in recent years, and even games coming out of Japan from franchises as famous and well-respected as Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest are finding themselves competing more and more with formidable western games from formidable western companies.

The company responsible for both aforementioned games -- Square Enix -- released its financial details for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2011. The information doesn't bode well for the company. I'll let Square Enix's president Yoichi Wada tell you himself with the truncated version of what's going on. "[Square Enix] experienced significantly lower sales and profit during the fiscal year mainly due to weak performance of console game titles released during the year as well as the impact of a continued delay in billing for a key online title, which was newly launched during the year."

The latter details from Mr. Wada's statement are probably most pressing for Square Enix right now. The game he's referencing is, of course, Final Fantasy XIV, a PC-centric MMO plagued with so many problems that it's still being played for free, without any sort of subscription fee charged to players. The PlayStation 3 version of Final Fantasy XIV is nowhere on the horizon yet either, likely due to the deep-seated issues the PC version of the MMO is experiencing.[/p]

Their fault for releasing a buggy, suckish MMO. They already had good momentum with FFXIII yet they chose to break it.
I agree, FFXIV is a complete rush-job, I guess their love of money took over.

Have you guys seen some of the interviews of the Square-Enix president and head software engineers? Square-Enix isn't great at programing games for the ps3/xb360 and is the main reason why FF13 turned out to be such a short game. If a rpg company can't program RPGs on the currant consoles, they'll need lots of luck doing it for the newer graphic cards of PCs.

well when you only make 1 game that's generic as the last of course your going to go downhill.
This.

QUOTE(Bladexdsl @ May 14 2011, 08:22 PM) Well, when you only make 1 game that's as generic as the last one, of course you're going to go downhill.

Is that too hard?!

8bitwaluigi, you missed "your", shouldn't it be "you're"? Sounds more appropriate if you ask me.

Anyways, I'm sure SE can bounce back if they release KH3 .-.

Anyways, they better release a decent FFXV in the future.. or at least improve FFXIV.
OT: No it's not odd compared to Rydian.

JEEZUS!

...But he's a staff member.

He posts just as much as before, except for the occasional news thread. Even before becoming a staff, he posted insanely.

TBH I'd say it's the other way around, on the PC you can give a shitty game massively high minimum specs to make up for incompetent/lazy coding. Consoles your stuck with what you have so have to squeeze what you can out of the hardware.

Square Enix produces more than just RPGs. They develop almost exclusively RPGs but they've produced more than that. They own Eidos, they own Taito.

And to say Square Enix is a shit developer is just shit taste. I'm no Final Fantasy fanboy here but FFXIII is great. Sure beats the hell out of X. Recently they made Dissidia 012 (possibly the best PSP game currently), FFIV: The Complete Collection (the best version of FFIV yet), and they're coming out with Deus Ex later this year and they're producing Dead Island.

Maybe they "milk the hell" out of Final Fantasy but it's not like this is sour milk.

But yeah, FFXIV is just a shit game. They should just learn to STOP making MMOs. Especially in a world populated with tons of popular MMOs now (a lot of which are going/are free to play like APB Reloaded), they should stick to what they do best: single player games.

And sorry if FFXIII doesn't contain ridiculously retarded sidequests about card games or Blitzball.

i am unsure what they were thinking when they released XIV because 11 was doing great. Updates would have kept the game going as it is now but a game immediately after 13 is quite unnecessary and probably more so if they are making more than just 2 bigs at the moment (i think another final fantasy also)
