Square Enix is Hurting

If they really are hurting, it's due to the fact that they're making crappy fighting games instead of epic RPG's. FF9 kicks some serious ass (beats 8 and 7 by leaps and bounds).

I know, this was a very interesting idea that could have made for an awesome game...but sadly it turned out to be just the opposite.

I know, this was a very interesting idea that could have made for an awesome game...but sadly it turned out to be just the opposite.

IIRC Geist for the gamecube had a similar concept, and was executed pretty well. I should pick up a copy of that as well.

You are correct. But Square handled the remake completely and they luckily didn't butcher it.

Their fault for releasing a buggy, suckish MMO. They already had good momentum with FFXIII yet they chose to break it.

It goes far beyond that unfortunately. The overall game design sucked, the environment was stupid and repetitive, the music was lame, the combat was horrid. This review pretty much sums up how I felt about the short time I spent playing the game in late beta.

In the US. Not that it matters since Quest developers were acquired by Squaresoft a while after developing Tactics Ogre, and then they developed Final Fantasy TActics and so on. The PSP version was developed largely by the same people that worked on the SNES original.

Also, fact: most of the people criticising FFXIV haven't even played it and they're only going by what they read in the Internet.

Meh. Square Enix have totally made me lose faith in them in recent years. It all started with FF12 which I personally felt was poorly paced, uninteresting and far too 'trying to be W.O.W'. Then they spat into that open wound with FF13, a game that may as well play itself. If it'd been a movie it would've been great. The FF14 was an unfinished buggy pile of arse. And no sequel to TWEWY, what gives?

Personally I think their time in the limelight ended long ago, right after FFX, to be honest. Around the time Mistwalker Studios popped up. They've made mostly crap since then. Their recent games have been all flash and no substance. The characters in FF13 were so poorly written that Lightning even comes right out and basically says 'I am now a totally different person'. They've lost their touch. Attention Square Enix employees. Just release the PS3 remake of FF7 to shut the fanboys up (myself included) and then just shuffle off into obscurity. Either that or take a bloody long look at yourselves and remember what made games like FF6 so fantastic.

Were I less lazy I might consider looking through some of their financial reports and other such things (although most subsidiaries seem to be private and I am not sure how much I can wrangle from their Japanese parent) - I have noticed they beefed up their publishing wings the last year or two however.

I was trying to get a list together of everything published recently but mobygames falls flat and I do not trust wikipedia.
Equally they had two fairly high profile cancellations in Gun Loco and Highlander the game and a few other games getting delayed not to mention it not being that long ago that the Eidos thing went through.

I will say though the last SE game I properly played was Just Cause 2 and that fell in March 2010 (aka the previous financial year from the one just gone). There were a few others that caught my eye (Singularity and Nier) but nothing I went out of my way to play (are we still ignoring Kane and Lynch 2?) although over the next couple of months that is set to change (Dungeon Siege III, dead island and a new deus ex game for just those with dates).

Well that's because they're made by Enix and not Square.

it just took me now to realize that before Square and Enix were joint together , Square only made up to FFX. after that , Square Enix was joint together and their next FF wasn't that great as they once were . maybe they're running out of story line ? or maybe they're just at the tip of the cliff for the series itself .

hoping that Versus will provide a decent if not great gameplay + storyline to make it more enjoyable . i also hope in FFXIII-2 , they'll be adding towns . i've always loved towns and buying items there , but i guess in XIII , it just didn't fit into the futuristic theme of computers .

I feel that Final Fantasy I-IX were the only good ones in the series, after that everything started to lack quality.
Dragon Quest on the other hand always end up being good, no matter what.
