This would be really... not good! I thought it would be: Turn it on. Plug the game in. Lets play.
This looks like "always one and without internet you loose". I hope so hard, this is hacked with all possible force so hard.

I don't like the looks of this, Can they really have it not work unless its updated?

Ugh, that's annoying it can't be set up without an internet connection, but if you plan on using an Express SD Card you're also required to update the console. It's pretty much mandatory, no way out of it.

Switch 2 is off to a disappointing start overall. I'll just use it as my Switch Pro.

That's actually a good news. Probably IT will let us modify any console because there is no way to accept eula. All we need is reverse engineer the console, exploit it to run unauthorized code, then run modified firmware.

I'm wondering what will happen around versions and factory resetting, if it would always need the internet to make the system functional.

Isn't needing a day 1 patch possibly invitation to potential exploit?
The way nintendo has been behaving lately, asking 10$ for already owned games to uncap FPS, ludicrous prices, remote bricking, empty catridges - as a long time loyal nintendo user I hope switch 2 gets hacked. I'm done with their bs.

Big decision to make then, with a possible outcome that may come to pass only in years of time. I could justify getting two Switches, one for use and one for tucking away, but three would be pushing the envelope.

Oh dont get me wrong, I'm getting a Switch 2. But let me just put it this way. Previous nintendo consoles are definitly being compensated for the price I pay. And any future exploits on Switch 2 will get all the attention it needs from me. I think many people feel the same way about nintendo lately tbh.

hello there. about day 1 patch.
im trying to prepare myself for future modding. my plan was to buy the thing (allready preordered) and just throw it in the closet and forget ;) but now im hearing about this day 1 patch which is mandatory to even start the console.
i wonder now what should i do day 1: throw the console in the closet and forget ? or patch it day 1 and then throw it in the closet ? any ideas ?

@xFlesk Don't update at all, just tuck it away. That "day one patch" everyone is so up in arms about is almost certainly included on early Switch 2 game carts and so if some exploit become available on that firmware, you can just pick up one of the early games (or get one now if you're so inclined), and you'll be good to go.

I highly doubt that Nintendo is requiring the unit be on the Internet just to use an SD card, it's probably a driver installation to simply activate the port, which will also be on Switch 2 carts.

While true they won't require it to be ALWAYS online they wouldn't have plastered the disclaimer on the page if it were simply an activation that could be done locally. It will almost certainly be a pairing/encryption step.

I guess we'll know next week.

What we need is for someone who has already decided they are going to update to the Day One patch and who has also bought a copy of MKW to test this. Put the switch into airplane mode, put MKW in the console and see if it installs the patch. If it does, can you use an SD card?

Hope someone does this.

The day one update is apparently needed to play Switch 1 games. It almost certainly does not mean the initial firmware has some hidden vulnerability.

Keep in mind that it is extraordinarily unlikely that even the launch firmware will have a software exploit as we know it is based on Horizon for Switch 1, and that has no software exploits or vulnerabilities.

Given that compatibility testing with Switch 1 games is ongoing, it would be sensible for the compatibility layer to be shipped with a day 1 update, rather than including whatever incomplete revision that was available at the time of the initial system manufacture.

This is why I'm sort of bummed about cancelling my third pre-order as I could have done both scenarios. Especially after finding out that pairing a MicroSD Express also requires internet. Might do a midnight release now.

I wonder how many people will buy one and keep it boxed on v1.0 only to be opened when it's exploitable. I know at least one person that will do that...
Me lol

Yeah me lol

It's 100% going to be a hardware exploit unless Nintendo does another RCM screwup like before but I assume it is probably gonna be 1 very early software based exploit and not any more.
