Rainbow Island crash just after the beginning of the first level (TZX FORMAT).
Yep - confirmed on all versions I have. I’ll start debug on that with coffee in the morning!

Edit: couldn't sleep. Found bug... was one optimization too many that was causing Rainbow Islands to crash. Not sure if any other games would be affected, but better safe than sorry so I fixed it, and pushed up 1.7a as the new official 1.7 release to my github page.

Whew!

found a version that work R-Type (1988)(Electric Dreams Software)[cr Torasoft][t +3 Torasoft][128K]
That's the best version.

However, it turns out with coffee this morning, I found the problem that was causing the original R-Type TXZ file to not load correctly. It had nothing to do with the aggressive tape handling I added but rather with the CPU changes I made to add additional accuracy. And there were a couple of other games (less popular than R-Type :) ) that were also affected.

With that, I've just pushed up 1.7b with this hotfix to correct the tape loader timeouts.

Sorry guys - this stuff isn't easy!!

Version 1.8 - 14-Nov-2025 by wavemotion-dave
  • Added ability to disable ULA contention (useful for Fantasy World Dizzy to improve speech and a few other games)
  • Key map cleanup - improved QAOP and Protek support
  • Better defaults for 48K games - more games configure themselves more correctly
  • Minor cleanup on tape edge handling
  • Fixed POK applied symbol
  • Corrected tape loader timeouts - was causing problems in loading some games (e.g. R-Type)
I tried not to make any big changes this time around... after having several hotfixes on 1.7 :)

Overall a very solid release, I think! But I've said that before...

Guys, is TWL (TWiLight Menu++) integration is planned? It would be nice to have a capability to run games directly from launcher.

I asked for it... but haven't seen anything happen on that front. Given that this is all hobby-time and those devs are busy with about a million other features, my guess is that Spectrum Emulation is low on the list. You might want to ask @RocketRobz directly if it's on any sort of backlog list.

But I'd love to see it... the emulation is quite good and it's a pixel-perfect 1:1 match for the DS/DSi screen. File types to support would be .tap, .tzx and maybe .z80 for good measure.

The bad news is that it dose require the BIOS files to be sourced by the end-user.
