i don't know about DVD-R, but for DVD+R, I've had no problems so far for Memorex and Maxell and Phillips. I don't have any Verbatim on hand, but if it's not broken and it costs more, why use it?
The only issues with DVD+R is booktyping, which just depends on your drive. It turns out my laptop drive is the only one of the 2 I tested (also tried a desktop drive) that sets the booktpying correctly and I haven't had any problems with bad burns from it. So even if people say you can't use a laptop burner, or you can't use this or that brand, or this or that speed, it really doesn't make a big difference in the end. Some have said that it's better to burn at faster speeds (but it probably won't make a big difference).
I started out burning at 4x and moved up to 16x after I found out it was (marginally) better and of course saves time.
