So when i pre ordered my switch i purchased a 512gb micro sd card (knowing it was a fake) the card eventually started acting up today so i ejected it from the switch and when inserting it back in i was told to format the sd card i was then told to update my switch, im confused because i was on 3.0.1 but now my switch is saying update is ready

It downloads updates automatically (not install.) If connected to the internet.

It has nothing to do with the SD Card.

To block it just use a DNS & use maintenance mode.

When you insert an SD card the switch will download a seperate update regardless of current version, it formats for FATex i believe and is only installed upon SD card use, why its like this? who knows, possibly they are not allowed to include the update for legal reason with microsoft, maybe its something they only got working after manufacturing so decided to just install the drivers when a user uses an SD card. either way its not a full update likely simply a driver but they dont have a separeate "driver update ready" so it goes through system update.

Most likely because Nintendo has to pay for every installation of this driver; therefore, they don't include it by default. If they did, they'd have to pay for every single Switch they produce. With the seperate download, they only pay for the ones that actually need the driver.

Turns out you guys were correct and that it was a sdxc update i was sadly already on 3.0.1 :(

We've got more bad news. You might as well send the fake MicroSD card back if possible because fake SD cards most likely have the capacity faked as well. Once you go over the real capacity the data will start overwriting previous written data thereby corrupting the data on the SD card. I'm guessing the SD card is really 8 GB.

A program called H2testw can test the true capacity on an SD card or USB drive. Test the SD card and let us know if you could.

Does this mean I will have to update my firmware in addition to getting the SD-support?

I'm currently on 2.0.0, and I foresee a future SD-card exploit for getting homebrew, hoping for some good news!

probably, it might download everything possible, not sure how the sd card update works, but it likely checks current system version also and just grabs everything
