Hello:

I looked through many pages of the thread about 6.0 for answers, but there seemed to be a lot of different opinions/advice so I’m not sure what the deal is. Just had these questions:

(Im running SX OS 1.9)

1. It’s inevitable that I’ll need to update to 6.0 at some point to play new games that require it, correct? Should I just stay on 5.1 for now, and deal with updating in the future when needed?

2. Some people have told me that it’s safe to update system firmware by booting into OFW and doing it normally. However, I vaguely remember someone else telling me that it should be updated through an NSP file of a new game. Could someone confirm what the best/safest method is?

3. From what you know now, will 6.0 have any negative impact on homebrew? In the other thread, someone mentioned that Homebrew would cease to function. Some others replied with different opinions but I am curious to know which is true.

4. I understand that SX OS will work fine with 6.0, but are there any other features of CFW that are at risk to malfunction in 6.0?

Thank you for the help

  1. Stay on 5.1 unless your desire to play online/use the eShop outweighs the benefits of staying on firmware 5.1
  2. The console is hacked; there is no safe way to update it. Theoretically, you could reflash a clean NAND backup you made, update to 6.0 officially, then make another NAND backup but this seems like unnecessary work when it comes to staying safe and updating.
  3. For one thing, homebrew/custom NSPs do not work on firmware 6.0. It is not currently known how many other homebrew applications do not work on firmware 6.0 however it is a safe assumption to make most, if not all, will not work.
  4. I do believe LayeredFS does not work on firmware 6.0 with SX OS

Wait for a game you like that need 6.0 (maybe Smash) and stay on 5.1 for now.

Perfect, thank you

Thanks for the thorough answers.

Very interesting about Homebrew, that really sucks. At the moment I don't use it for much, but I was looking forward to using RetroNX in the future.

Could I ask what an example of a custom NSP would be? Would this include all backups in NSP format, or only some kind of modified NSP file?

.NSP is basically a container of one or more .NCA files (and some other unimportant things). A legitimate .NSP would include .NCAs signed by Nintendo which include games, updates, and DLC. A custom or illegitimate .NSP would be full of .NCAs not signed by Nintendo such as homebrew.

I also would wait for other to upload first. But from the looks of it, I dont think the 6.0 update will affect us as much as it seems it will

We received some feedback from some expert users who are early adopters of the upcoming 6.0 firmware update. It appears we had overlooked something which made SXOS not boot firmware 6.0 for users with an exFAT formatted microSD card.

Oops. Suffice to say, we wasted no time to track down the root cause of this issue and fixed it up for you, still ahead of the official 6.0 release schedule!

Another thing which has been addressed is the incompatibility of the current "layeredFS" implementation with firmware 6.0. SX OS will now automatically disable "layeredFS" support when running on firmware 6.0, preventing any crashes/hangs.

That's it for now. We're running out of (reasonable) minor version numbers for SX OS 1… which means we are revving up for the big SX OS 2.0 release! At this point we can't spoil yet what the next iteration of SX OS has in store for you, but rest assured it will be exciting.

Again, sorry for this minor bug-fix release.

Enjoy the upcoming 6.0 firmware with SX OS!

  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
Do I restart now using what i've learned on the EU version since it's a better overall experience? or do I continue with the US version since that is what ive been using, and if someone decides to play my hack, it would most likely be that version?
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
@TwoSpikedHands, I'll preface this with the fact that I know nothing about the game, but, I think it depends on what your goals are. Are you trying to make a definitive version of the game? You may want to refocus your efforts on the EU version then. Or, are you trying to make a better US version? In which case, the only way to make a better US version is to keep on plugging away at that one ;)
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
I'm not familiar with the technicalities of the differences between the two versions, but I'm wondering if at least some of those differences are things that you could port over to the US version in your patch without having to include copyrighted assets from the EU version
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
@Sicklyboy I am wanting to fully change the game and bend it to my will lol. I would like to eventually have the ability to add more characters, enemies, even have a completely different story if i wanted. I already have the ability to change the tilemaps in the US version, so I can basically make my own map and warp to it in game - so I'm pretty far into it!
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I really would like to make a hack that I would enjoy playing, and maybe other people would too. swapping to the EU version would also mean my US friends could not legally play it
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I am definitely considering porting over some of the EU features without using the actual ROM itself, tbh that would probably be the best way to go about it... but i'm sad that the voice acting is so.... not good on the US version. May not be a way around that though
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
    I appreciate the insight!
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
@TwoSpikedHands just switch, all the knowledge you learned still applies and most of the code and assets should be the same anyway
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
    and realistically they wouldn't

be able to play it legally anyway since they need a ROM and they probably don't have the means to dump it themselves
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
why the shit does the shitbox randomly insert newlines in my messages
  • Veho @ Veho:
It does that when I edit a post.
  • Veho @ Veho:
It inserts a newline in a random spot.
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
never had that i don't think
  • Karma177 @ Karma177:
do y'all think having an sd card that has a write speed of 700kb/s is a bad idea?
trying to restore emunand rn but it's taking ages... (also when I finished the first time hekate decided to delete all my fucking files )
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
@Karma177 that sd card is 100% faulty so yes, its a bad idea
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
even the slowest non-sdhc sd cards are a few MB/s
  • Karma177 @ Karma177:
@The Real Jdbye it hasn't given me any error trying to write things on it so I don't really think it's faulty (pasted 40/50gb+ folders and no write errors)

    run h2testw on it

when SD cards/microSD write speeds drop below a meg a sec, they're usually on the verge of dying

Samsung SD format can sometimes fix them too
  • Purple_Heart @ Purple_Heart:
yes looks like an faulty sd
  • Purple_Heart @ Purple_Heart:
@Psionic Roshambo i may try that with my dead sd cards

@The Real Jdbye, I considered that, but i'll have to wait until i can get the eu version in the mail lol
