As the guy said try your best not to break the ribbon cable flaps. It's a really fiddly process. You could maybe get away with using electrical tape to hold the cables down if it does happen. If a cable rips just cop a new system off eBay I'd say. 2DS if you're broke.

As others have mentioned, it's really easy to break the ribbon cables when replacing the shell. But seeing as currently the console is near unusable, it can't get much worse.
It's your best bet right now.
The ribbon cable to the upper screen that goes through the hinge is the trickiest part as it has to be wrapped in a specific way so the cable isn't damaged from opening/closing the lid. If you can manage that without breaking anything, the rest should be easy.
Before doing all of this, while your console is still usable, I'd suggest making a new NAND backup, and a GodMode9 essentials backup (requires B9S I believe) if you don't already have one, that is assuming you have CFW. So in case you irreparably break it, you are still able to transfer your friend list, games and saves to another console if/when you decide to get one.
