SO guys, I've been looking around for a decent second hand ps3 for quite a while now, and I THINK i may have stumbled upon a good deal.

A guy I know (not the smartest guy around, as I assume from the price) is selling his ps3 for $50 buckeroos. But its not just any PS3, its one of the oldies that plays PS2 games (dunno exactly which one of those ATM but I don't care much for wifi.) The only thing is that the disc laser is broken. If any of you have tried to replace a laser/entire disc drive, how hard is it? Is this a good deal for a PS3? Am I better off buying an entire drive, or just the laser? I'm not afraid to fiddle around with its guts, so I'm not a total noob in that area.

I assume the purchase of the laser/drive would add at least another 60 AUD to the price, but it is still a lot less than a new ps3. And the PS2 capable ones are more rare right?

Thanks for any help I can get

If I'm not mistaken, the PS3 has two lasers: one for Blu-Ray, one for CD/DVD. If the Blu-Ray one is broken, you have a device that plays PS1/PS2 games and downoadable PSN games for 50 dollars. If the CD/DVD one is broken, you have a PS3 that cannot play CD/DVD/PS1/PS2, but can play PS3.

Either way, even if you can't fix the laser, it's a great deal.

Thanks guys. Well then, looks like I'm getting a ps3

I will end up fixing it, Because I'm quite sure the blu-ray laser is broken from what he told me, and if I wanted console that could play ps1/2 I'd go steal my ps2 back

I do plan to get something that allows me to play backups, but unless there is a way to rip the games from my computer (which im pretty sure there isn't, and i only have 20gb of Internet quota), I still have to repair the disc drive.

@ zephyr, I really dont want to be sending a ps3 to the eastern states (for postage, safety and convenience reasons), so i doubt that will happen. If I can't repair it myself I'll just have to find somewhere in Perth to repair it.

Oh, and do the ps2 swap discs work on the old ps3s?

only 1 laser. lol
ps3 phat gen 1 uses kem-400a laser, i just replaced one in my ps3, its easy to do provided you have some expierence disassembling things, you need to remove the case, take the brdrive out and either
a. take off the drive controller board and attach it to a whole new brdrive (because the mobo and brdrive controller board are married or
b. take apart the brdrive and replace the laser assembly...
this is what it looks like
kem400aaa.jpg

this is what the underside of the brdrive looks like
ps3-kem400aaa-5.jpg

you can see in this pic, the drive controller board, its only held on by 4 or 5 screws and the cables...

if you need anything more to know i can tell you.

I'm so pumped, NCAA football video game is back after a 10 year hiatus, coming to SeriesS/X, PS5 in July.
  • BigOnYa @ BigOnYa:
Wish they would let us play the NCAA football 14 on newer xbox, its one of the only games I love and own on disc still, that is not back compatible, bs.

@BigOnYa My dad recently bought a spare Series X off of me, got game pass, and saw Madden '24 on Game Pass, decided to try it out.

...He was a bit taken aback by the 60GB download size. Poor guy's still living in the 90s!

@K3Nv2 He was looking into consoles for his house anyway (for my younger siblings and himself) and I had a spare XSX and Switch I ended up selling him at pretty steep cuts. I would just give them to him, but I did buy them with the intent to sell them... and college is super expensive.
