Hey all! After a frantic day of setting up my Gateway, I've finally gotten to what i've been trying to do all along: updating my retail Smash Cart.

I found the 1.0.5 USA patch from the internet, and installed it in EmuNAND using the BigBlueManager. The 1.0.5 update is clearly in my microsd when I look at it from EmuNAND's data manager, but when I put in my Smash cart in classic mode or sysNAND, it still shows as being on 1.0.1. What gives? Could anyone help me? I'm under the impression that 1) there's something i'm missing or 2) i'm installing the wrong update region.

Did you install the correct region? Make sure you double check. If you installed the update cia with Title manager then it's probably the wrong region.

What do you mean by "If you installed the update cia with Title manager then it's probably the wrong region"?

I think problem is that most cias (including updates) don't work in classic mode. Dump your cart and run it in gateway mode as a .3dz.

Meaning if you used Title Manager, and it still isn't working then the CIA was for the wrong region.

I thought it was just "unsigned" CIAs. He is trying to install an update for a game which should work right?

Yeah, looks I was wrong, only will work in emuNand. But yeah if you dump the game, and update in emuNand you can then just play it off your Gateway.

Game updates are signed per-console, and only Nintendo can sign them (when you download them from the eshop).

I thought updates were like the 100% legit signed CIA installs of pre-bundled games but I was mistaken. :)

Then is there no way for me to play my retail cart?
Your cart will work just fine in classic mode it just won't have the update and you can't play online.

Do plan on playing online? As stated dump it as a 3dz and optionally convert it to cia or download a smash cia.
Cia files are like sandwiches, they taste so much better when somebody else makes them.

TIP: Next time you have eshop access download all the updates to games you think you might want to play. Eshop does not check to see if you own the cart.

Yeah, the way I normally do it is just get the updates off the eShop in emunand classic and it works flawlessly on my retail cart in classic mode

my suggestion is just to wait until 9.6 is supported on emunand

One thing that just occurred to me.... The sound on the 2600 sucked less back then the harsh sound we hear now is from infinitely better speakers we have now, back when the 2600 was new speakers produced a almost muffled sound, like CRTs made old graphics look slightly better.
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
I wonder if I could recommend that to some emulation devs that perhaps the sound could use some smoothing out to simulate those old TVs
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
I think a few of the early systems could benefit from that, at least up to the 8 bit generation, by the 16 bit generation I think TVs had gotten a lot better in almost every way

Just give it a try, but honestly if you have a 3DS you can play DS games without a card just off the internal SD card
