So, I'm now on 9.2
The rxtools tutorial thread seems really complicated for something so simple. Is there a new way to install rxtools firmware?

It's NOT simple, not simple at all, and it's risky. The rxtools tutorial is one of many ways to get this done but it is the best approach, the rxtools complete package also has some tutorial info in it that can work.

This is driving me nuts. I've tried Menuhax and Browserhax over and over again. I've formatted. I've tried two different SD cards. I've tried two different versions of sysUpdater. I've tried loading it through HBL and straight through Menuhax at boot time. And every combination of the above. For literally 5 hours now. Nothing's worked. I'm reinstalling Ironfall now to try through Ironhax to see if anything improves. I also just realized that I have OoT3d, so I'm going to try that too, I suppose.

So then, do I really want to do it? Can I install CIA files without rxtools? I'm really in it for the free games

If you just want to bitch that is fine, but if you want help then you need to articulate exactly what isn't working and where you are getting stuck.

Man this is not fun.

First it takes forever to get the downgrade to boot, and when it does I get the failed to get CIA file info error.

Ugh.

hahah, I can't tell if you really want to do it. I did it for the fun and education. If you are doing it just to steal games then this whole thing is a pretty big waste of time.

you can install CIAs in sysnand without rxtools using pasta to patch security keys.

If you just want to be an evil messed up pirate then I'd just buy a sky3ds+

You need the kernel patched to be able to install games [specifically ARM9 kernel], that's one of the reasons CFW exists. You could use another CFW if you wanted, as rxTools isn't your only option, don't however whine because it involves some effort and double checking. Plenty of people on here who can't even get the downgrade working.

Or he could downgrade and get a Gateway...

Np! rxtools time! Still figuring it out!

DON'T!

you are using 2DS so when you downgrade to 2.4 you will get brick because it WILL ask you to turn the 3D slider on, and you can't do ANYTHING until you do so but 2DS doesn't have one so you pretty much end bricking your 2DS

DON'T DON'T DON'T

You're absolutely right, and I apologize for not being clearer. The result differs somewhat randomly. Sometimes at launch of sysUpdater, the screen stays black and no text appears, other times it loads the menu, and I can press Y and it'll hang indefinitely (I've left it sitting there up to 20 minutes, and it never updates, and I can't quit, have to power off). Sometimes it'll bring up the unable to read CIA info message, and I can quit, and relaunch. That's on Julian's, all of that. On TuxSH's version (which I know has been pulled down intentionally, but it's still referenced in some tutorial threads), it starts spitting out the numbered steps and I've had it hang on 2, 3, 5, and 7. 5 is the most consistent, 2 and 3 were only once or twice each. 7 has been a small handful of times.

The CIAs are coming from the known good 9.2.0-20U package from That ISO Site. On both SD cards, they're in a top level directory called "updates". I've verified that there are no other files in the directory via a visual check on Windows with the SD cards connected, and by logging in via FTBrony and checking there.

The hardware in question is a N3DS, specifically the MH4U US one if it's relevant, running 10.3.0-28U.

Alright so I'm using browserhax, update 10.3.0-28U, old 3ds xl, I have all the files needed for the downgrade (the update cia files for 9.2 that is) and whenever I boot sysupdater, i can't get past #2 and I get an error that states: "can't force threads to core 1 failure :(" My 3ds does not brick or mess up afterwards since I can simply reboot it, but it does this every time. Does anyone know what may be wrong with it??

Menuhax in general seems to work the best for people, you do mean 9.2.0-20U for the package don't you? Other than that it sounds like people on n3ds in general just need to try many more times to get it working, Took me 20 attempts on o3ds myself.

Same here.

What entrypoint are you using? I have Ninjhax and Menuhax.

Menuhax always gives me a black screen and Ninjhax is more reliable, I get the red message, press Y, but then failed CIA error. Having to go through the Cubic Ninja menu is driving me crazy too. lol

I presume you mean 9.2 CIA package.

This all sounds like stuff that most people have seen a bunch of times, often it's just trying over and over again it seems.
options are:
- different SD card
- format SD card prior to doing anything such that it has nothing else besides the update, hax, sysupdater stuff
- format sysnand prior to update
- upon entering menuhax launch ftbrony then quit then launch sysupdated
- replace boot.3dsx with sysupdater so the exploit launches sysupdater directly instead of homebrew launcher first.

I don't know if any of the above help but it's what people have done to get closer.

I've tried with Menuhax and Browserhax so far. Said that in my earlier post, but should have included it here too.

I did mean 9.2, sorry. I'm half asleep here, and edited that into my post while you were replying. The only thing I haven't tried out of what you're listing there is removing everything from the SD card but the essentials. I put them back on after I formatted it previously. I'll try a couple other entry points, and if those don't work, I'll try trimming the SD card down too. No harm in giving it a shot. Thanks for pointing that one out, I didn't think of it.
