Should I use Linux instead of Windows?

I'm using Windows 8.1 and I heard Linux is a lot better, and I saw that everyone here uses Linux, but i'm afraid of switching to Linux since i'm very used to Windows, and i have understood a lot of programs arent compatible with Linux and you have to write code to install the ones that are compatible

Forced ads, more telemetry, wanting to you to login to a Microsoft account for my OS (even if it's easy to bypass. Shouldn't be a question either way), re-renabling stuff you turned off because "they know better", The search function is broken that it want to search the internet rather than going online.

Now Microsoft want to get this "Recall" on computers. I guess it starts with "NPU" for AI and probably will eventually use your inbuilt GPU eventually to start using this "Recall" more. It's just one whistleblower away from being a massive clusterfuck, not to mention all virus makers will target it to extract passwords etc.

Windows 11 is far from perfect and it's scary how bad it's starting to get.


EDIT: Linux is no way near ready for the big mass of people that just want to click .exe and run their game. It's getting there on these distros could fucking unite with a standard.

These are mostly all of the reasons why I've wished that the transition from Windows to Linux at least for me can be smooth as butter. If MSI Center was on Linux, I would be all set! But nah..

Recall AI is only happening to those with the extremely beefy processors thay is required for it. Still doesn't stop Copilot and stuff from being within the OS. I just wished that I can use Tiny11 as my main distro.

For now. We never know what they will do tomorrow and how much you can actually disable it fully without hacks.

I installed Linux Mint on my old laptop. It ran much faster than the Windows 7 that was already on it. Linux Mint or Linux Lite I would reccomend for completely new users of Linux. Once you get used to it you can switch to Ubuntu or a more popular version. Linux Mint is a lot like Windows but a ton customizable for the desktop. The fastest version is xfce, that is what I installed. The start menu looks a little like macos

Ah so I were right! You have no idea about Windows 11 except surface level. Figured so much, and no. I totally agree Linux is still not for the average joe. It got a long way before that but if you're slightly interested in it, it gotten a lot better. But no way near for the masses.

You can disable co-pilot. And you'll most likely be able to disable whatever else is added. I've proven people here wrrong about quite a few misconceptions surrounding Windows on more than one occasion. People exaggerate and say a lot of things that just simply aren't true at all, or are quite misleading.

Usually when you have a bootable Linux on a USB/SD Card (use Rufus and have the ISO with you), Linux would ask if you want to remove it, dualboot it, or do whichever you want with Linux.

I tried going full Linux for work/school at one point, and it reminded me how convenient Windows actually is.

I think Linux actually works great for people who can't understand anything about computers. I installed Manjaro (it was hype at the time and it was before the controversies ...) when my mom received this very very old laptop that wouldn't even turn on without being plugged and it actually worked great. She just needed to write stuff, watch youtube and send emails.
If you're somewhere in the middle between « someone who just wants the bare minimum » and « master of Linux » then Windows is more convenient.


And honestly I don't think Windows is as bad as some people say it is, even tho there are some obvious and serious concerns to have. I would still say that W11 is better than 10, especially for gaming.
There was this bug that apparently was very old and would just appear if you had more than one screen at different frequencies. Basically if you were playing a game in borderless and some pixel would change on whatever screen (could be a tiny tint change in the taskbar when you receive a discord update), Windows would dynamically adapt to the lowest refresh rate you have on your setup, whenever there was the tiniest movement.
So in my case I just couldn't understand why the fps counter wouldn't change a single bit on Warframe, yet I can definitely see the difference between 60hz and 144hz with my own eyes, I felt like I was going crazy.
So sure, fullscreen worked as expected, but on some games I'd rather have the convenience of alt tabing rather than the slight improvement in inputlag. That got fixed in W11 (the driver wasn't available at the time when I was looking for it, I guess it is now but I'm not sure)


I did got a thing for custom Windows installations tho .... I've been on AtlasOS for a few months now, and it works great. So even if they were to push their Recall shit, I guess I would just stick to AtlasOS or whatever custom Windows installation (or even for people who don't want to bother, there are still software to shutdown a lot of shit). To me Windows is basically like Firefox in the sense that for it to be really great, you need to tweak it and remove all the garbage for it to fit your needs. Hence why, honestly, I think that for old people and people who don't care about computers : Linux is better.


But next time I'll try Bazzite ... That thing looks neat. I was more of a Debian guy but I think I kinda get why my teacher said his preferred distro was Fedora

Again, you are too foolish to comprehend that you are the one who started this argument. I myself at least have experience with Linux. I’d actually suggest EndeavorOS because it is one of the most stable distros I have tested, with an easy installation process, including dualboot options.

While Windows is obiviously in a horrible state right now, it's not like it's now been in a horrible state. I've heard that even some things from 7 were weird decisions that Microsoft has been making. It's just that the year is 2024, and everything is becoming better and worse. I'm still sticking to Windows 11, even if I can't update it due to having Rectify11 being on 23H2.

People are comparing it to 10, but when it released it was received poorly too. Sure, 11 at release wasn't really great either but in 2024 I don't see what W10 does better than W11.

The reason people are mainly comparing 10 to 11 in my eyes is because 11 initially removed features that were present in 10, but at the same time, most of those "features" could be brought back with something like Rectify11 (although the more I mention Rectify, the more I regret using it. Their support is LACKING.)

I believe my MSI Pulse Gl66 has everything to run Recall other than the Processor. Just get a Windows PC that doesn't have the processor. I know that there's stronger ones anyways.

24h2 hasn't released publicly yet, but it's on other versions of Windows.

I saw and want to try out AtlasOS, but it doesn't have perfect compatibility with Windows 11 Home. Maybe Tiny11 would be something that I'd try out, but Idek how I'm supposed to effectively downgrade my Windows 11 version with that. I also don't know how to even get Tiny11.

Depends on the hardware and how you use your device/PC.

If you want to play games without the hassle of having to learn a new OS, then stick with Windows.

If you only use the device for web browsing, video streaming etc. (media purpose) Then Linux isn't too bad as it's very lightweight compared to Windows, less heavy on CPU/RAM. Personally I prefer Linux as I have more control over my hardware. Like custom fan speeds for my laptop, under-volting etc. Linux can be intimidating at first, but you'll learn to appreciate it.
