I'm interested in taking the plunge but I have never owned a (non-handheld) Nintendo console before and I have a few questions...

If I buy the splatoon console bundle will it come with firmware 5.3.2?
If I stay on this version will I be able to play splatoon online?
What are the downsides to staying on this firmware?
I want to play downloaded Wii and Gamecube games is that possible on 5.3.2?
How does the controller situation work, I want to play 4 player spilt screen games do I need to buy 3 or 4 Wii controllers to play (Wii/Wii U/Gamecube) games? What about the motion plus stuff?
I need to buy one of the exploitable Wii games as well right?

Any advice is greatly appreciated, I know google is a thing but I'm having trouble finding concrete answers.

The Splatoon Premium Wii U bundle is overpriced and the game isn't really worth what the bundle's going for. Just go with the Basic Wii U and get Splatoon separately, if you want it so badly yet for a cheaper price.

Also, since you can use an external HDD/USB (USB Stick or an adapter with a card) you don't have to worry about storage limitations as you can buy 16GB, 32GB, 64GB, 128GB, 250GB, 320GB, 500GB, 1TB, 2TB or whatever.

Seems hard to get the basic version currently.
Thinking to get the Splatoon bundle during the Bigw sale ($328) and flogging off the splatoon key on ebay for $50ish.

Quoted so you would see this again, OP. This is probably your best answer. Mathmatically it doesnt make much sense to buy the limited edition.

Given you are not in U.S. I can't comment directly on pricing, but check your regions Nintendo site for refurbished. In the U.S. They are only $200 and come with full 1 year warranty, but no games or maybe Nintendoland.

As WiiCube and bortz point out don't pay extra for the 32GB version if the 8GB is available. Storage is cheap.

There is little chance a retail bundle will have 5.4 on it right now, but you will need 5.4 for eshop or any online play. (This is why I bought a used "console only" on eBay and leave it offline). A refurbished Wii U and used "console only" should cost the same as a new retail unit and now you have all bases covered. :)

The controller situation is complex and is dependent on what games you want to play. I have WUPCs for most of the Wii U titles and GameCube controllers and adapter for Smash. I also have 4 Wiimotes with the old motion plus dongles from my Wii. Wiimote+ are available refurb end from N as well.

WUPC do not have motion controls, only the gamepad and Wiimotes do.

For now I prefer to leave the Wii U alone and just switch to my Wii for legacy games. It keeps my wiiU warranty intact. So I can't help with all the pros/cons of hacking the vWii. IMO re syncing the controllers is not much of a pain. From my understanding the difference in graphics quality is dependent on how your TV processes the signal. Some find the Wii better, some the vWii. Unless someone has the exact same model of TV as you results will likely be different.

Yes, you would need a exploitable game to hack the vWii.

What a game is "worth" depends on how much enjoyment you get out of it. I spent $50 on Wii Party U and it got 2 hours of play. Given how much my kids like Splatoon it is easily worth $200 for us.

I've got the WUPC and despite how great it feels for Wii U games that support it, just, just go with Wiimote + Wii Classic Controller or Hori GameCube-styled. It's a better deal overall.

Thanks for all the advice guys, I bought a used console for $300 plus Mario kart for $60 and I'm pretty happy. I'll buy some controllers down the line as well. Planning on keeping it 5.3.2 which sucks since that prevents online play/dlc but that's the price you pay I guess.
