Sold all my 3DS's a while ago. Now all I have is an R4 card, which I don't really know if it'd work. It's an R4 SDHC 2017 or something like that I bought from someone on this site. Made sure it doesn't expire, and it's good.
So, with that laying around, I don't really have a use for it. Should I buy a DS or DSi in 2017? It was kinda annoying playing DS games on the 3DS because of the black bars and I heard DSi is the best way to experience DS games, so idk. Thoughts?

If you want to play on a large screen, the DSi XL is the way to go. Many say that the scaling on the DSi XL is pretty good despite it's size.

If you just want t play DS games, get the DSi or DS lite. I'd recommend the DS lite as it's cheaper on Amazon plus it has the Slot-2 for GBA games or a GBA flashcard if you have one.

Doesn't the DS Lite have problems with hinges?

A lot of people had cracked hinges, I personally never had a problem with that though, I think it should be fine as long as you're careful with it.
Also, the DS Lite is fucking sexy :D

I hate the matte design of the DSi, especially on non-black models because the camera is still black and looks out of place. DSi XL is a much nicer design though.
I think unless you need the bigger screen DS Lite is the best choice since it has a slot-2. GBA compatibility>DSiWare :)

The DS Lite would prolly be a better choice, since it has a wider range of carts it supports, and the GBA functionally, like The Real Jdbye said. If the DSishop was still around, the DSi could be the better option, since some of the DSiWare was kinda cool. I prefer the smaller systems over the XL because I have trump hands, and the systems fit nicer.
The DS Lite could run slot 2 flashcarts I think. I don't actually know, but I think there's a few for it around somewhere.

DS Lite does not use micro switches so the buttons feel mushy.

DSi has micro switches so the buttons are clicky.

I really prefer my DSi. I only use my DS lite to dump and inject GBA saves.

consider the guitar hero game. It's a great game, but only playable on ds/ds lite

Okay, so I've owned a DS Lite, DSi, and currently have a DSi XL. DS Lite feels much cheaper than the DSis and the DS Lite D-pad is so much worse! Also, I've had broken hinges, too. It's a really common problem, and happens even with minimal wear. I'd say go for a DSi or a DSi XL if you prefer larger screens. The scaling is just fine, I've had no problems with the DSi XL screens. And hey, they're pretty cheap nowadays, too.

I own a few DS Lites, a DSi, a DSi XL (and a New 3DS and New 3DSXL).

DS Lite - really nice and compact, GBA slot, insane battery life, good but small screens
DSi - lovely matt finish, nice and compact, DS games look better than they do on the 3DS consoles
DSi XL - best looking screens of the lot - think they must be IPS - bright colours through a wide range of viewing angles. 1:1 pixel rendering of DS games due to having the same native resolution.

So for the very best DS game experience - go DSi XL
For that original DS experience and GBA support - go DS Lite

Price wise - there's little difference (why not get both ;) ) - I paid £18 for my DSi XL in very near mint condition but not boxed. DS Lite - I bought one recently for £10 delivered in reasonable condition (converting it into a DS Macroboy for GBA games only). Another I bought for £15 in great condition with a case and 2 games.

    my dad works for nintendo.
back in 2006 or so.. i had a friend with a PHAT DS with the screen hanging out lol the hinge in his phat ds was in a very bad shape..
i bought a pre owned DS lite years ago... hinge is perfect... much better than my 3ds (which i bought in retail)
the ds lite seems sturdy In my opinion.. but if you don't care about the GBA slot and it's functions\habilities, go for dsi XL

Hmmm are there Gameboy carts like the R4 that works with the DS Lite? Because it'd be awesome having DS games pirated and GBA games pirated.
    -EDIT-
At the same time, DSi XL sounds pretty good. Might go for that instead since I can already emulate GBA on my phone

Yes it can. All gba games are compatible with Dslite. It only misses the cable for multiplayer and gb/c compatibility. I personally like the fat ds better then thr lite as it feels better but many will disagree. You can backup your saves for gba from the phone and inject to real carts of the game, or place on gba flashcart, thats how I played fire red as its slow as hell.
Dsixl is good only for its big screen. You cant play games that need gba slot or play gba games. The dsi software was pretty crappy and now its not working so yeah... if you wanna big screens go for dsi but if you wanna gba go for dslite/fat.
Also on dslite you can use ds/gba interactions like transfering pokemon from gen 3 to gen 4 etc... and think like that- fast paced games are unplayable on touch screen controls. So ds is better then emulation on mobile (unless you wanna carry a controller around)

I'd say get a ds lite. The best of both worlds. DS and GBA games.

    Between insane and insecure
I loved my DS Lite since the day I got it. I've basically kept the same board and kept replacing the shell when it broke. Which is the sad reality for the DS Lite, it's amazing, but breaks if you look at it cross eyed
I would still say to get a DS Lite because
    1: FlashME
    2: GBA support

I actually really like the soft feel of the DS Lite buttons, I wouldn't call them mushy though.
There sure are, either the EZFlash 3-in-1 or EZFlash IV Lite Deluxe will do the job nicely. The 3-in-1 uses your DS cart as storage, and when you select a GBA game from the DS flashcart it'll be copied to the slot-2 temporarily (just takes a few seconds if the game is 16MB or less, 32MB games like Mother 3 need to be flashed to NOR which takes longer but is persistent so you don't have to reflash it every time if you're just playing the same game)
The EZIV works similarly, but has its own menu and Mini/MicroSD slot. Recently there was a MicroSD version of the EZIV released but I think it was only released in GBA size.

These are both DS Lite sized so they don't stick out of the bottom.
I believe it's still possible to get ahold of both of them.
Any other GBA flashcart might be tricky to find, there are some other good ones like EverDrive which you can still find as it was released recently (but it's bigger than GBA size so it sticks out a lot on a DS Lite) or M3 Perfect Lite (best option if you can find one but they haven't been in production for ages)
Out of these, the EZ3-in-1 and EZIV don't have RTC, this isn't a big deal but may be annoying in Pokemon as the clock will only progress when you're playing (by use of a clock patch, without that it won't progress at all)
The EverDrive and M3 Perfect Lite do but as said the EverDrive is bulky (not to mention expensive) and the M3 Perfect Lite may be impossible to find.

Hmmm, DS Lite do seem to have a lot of benefits.
Which is making it harder to choose between a DS Lite which have GBA and DS in one, or DSi XL with only DS but have the best display.
I might go for the DSi XL because don't think I'll use the DS Lite for GBA that much because I use my phone and PC for GBA, especially when I bought an MFi Controller just to be used with GBA4iOS LOL.
So I think imma go with the XL since it gives my R4 (still not sure if it works on DSi XLs) a purpose.

Your R4 may not work on a DSi if it's on the most recent firmware. I'm not familiar with those timebomb cards. My R4i Gold RTS works but my original R4 and Acekard 2i don't.

My current favorite is a Red DSi. I own many XLs, DS Lites, and OG phats. The regular DSi fits my needs well. I never liked GBA gaming on the DS so I keep my SP for that duty. Buy a normal DSi, or XL...and you will be happy.
