Gaming Scribblenauts Hype and News Thread

It's working on my Supercard DS One and on my Acekard, but if I type T-REX, gives to him meat enough, mount on him and use a teleporter or a time-machine, the game freezes with two black screens.

Using a electroshocker gun on a corpse hangs the game, but just sometimes...

It's good to see some people are having the problem as well, but many are playing the game fine... dunno what's the problem.

HG/SS
Mini ninjas
M&L 3
and... SCRIBBLENAUTS!!!
could this week get any better!

The controls and A.I on this game are barbaric. It's definitely extremely messy and unpolished, but with as many objects/people/things as it has, I'm really not surprised. Nor do I expect much more from it.

The puzzles/action levels are extremely fun, amd kept me coming back. But seriously, it's definitely not GOTY material.
Innovative, yes. I can't imagine it scoring in the 9's, as it can be a bit unpleasant at times.

It's giving me a good reason to keep my DSi in use (finally)

Wow. Someone else with some common sense finally. Truly, I thought I was the only one not stricken by the hype machine for this game. I was incredibly excited for the game before it hit, but that doesn't make me blind to its faults -- and it has faults. The A.I. and physics are almost broken, making a lot of the levels rely heavily on luck. The things I've had to do in order to get through many of the levels are ridiculous, and most of my success has been based on accidental actions, rather than creativity.

The main thing I have a problem with, though, is the camera. Not sure whose idea it was to force the camera to snap back after a few seconds, but it sucks major balls -- seriously. I want to be able to sit and contemplate how to best negotiate an obstacle and what have you, and though this might seem like a minor thing, it isn't.

No, if it seems like I'm bashing the game, well, I'm sorry. I think it's got a lot of charm, there's tons of value here, and I'd still buy it and recommend it to people. But I think its main value comes from being a toy you can tinker with. The puzzle levels are cleverly designed, but the mechanics don't match up well with what you're tasked to accomplish. It's great, though, that you can create your own levels, and obviously the premise of the game itself is awesome. But people who deny the game has issues suffer from an inability to enjoy a game that has flaws. I'm enjoying Scribblenauts and I'll continue to fool with it, but it's broken in many ways. It feels very amateurish from a design standpoint. Still very creative, but I think they should have involved some more experienced game makers in the production of this game.

The game has some flaws, that's undeniable, the physics and AI can bring some frustrating moments some times, but it's one of those games that are so creative and fun, that you end up forgiving those flaws.

I'm having a blast with it.. definitely one of the best games on the DS, one of the best games I've played this year and by far the most original concept for a game that I've seen in a long time. I'm buying it as soon as possible

I'm going to have to agree with quite a few points put forward here. Especially the camera and it's annoying 'feature' of snapping back to Maxwell (which is extremely annoying sometimes). Although, I personally feel that the under-developed AI/Physics adds to the humour of the game.

Overall, I'd give it an 8.5/10, possibly a 9.

It is indeed a fantastic "waste of time"

however, i think the hype has over-egged the game somewhat.

there is a good chance of coming back to the game over and over to find ever more eccentric ways to complete levels.

it can get frustrating when Maxwell decides to jump into shark/piranha infested water when you only tapped on the bank.

But overall quite enjoyable.

This is actually a really fun game! I found that if you type 'Scribblenauts' backwards, you get a game cartridge, and if you type 'particle accelerator' and use it, it will create a black hole.

Fair enough, and that pretty much describes my approach to the game. It's got enough going for it that I'm able to forgive most of its shortcomings. One of the best DS games ever? Not in my opinion. One of the best ideas for a game ever? Absolutely. But the execution is too poor for me to consider it even a great game. It's a good game, a fun game, but I find its foibles to be too frustrating to have a blast with it -- at least in terms of the main game. Tinkering is a different story.

They should have worked a little bit longer on it.

I started level 1-1 for the first time. I read the hint, and summoned a HOSE for the fireman. I clicked it, he grabbed it. I see a baker, and summon a PAN. I click on it, but instead of him taking it, I do. I click on the baker, which makes me hit him with the pan. The cop then attacks me, so I'm forced to beat him to death with said pan.

I agree, I'm really enjoying it. There have been a couple of these puzzle games so far, like the ones where you try to build a machine from components, or the crayon physics app, and they have varying degrees of how well they actually work.

Anybody complaining and going the 'well it's nice but it's got HUGE GAPING FLAWS HOLY FUCKBALLS" route is probably somebody that had unreasonably high expectations, like they were going to invent magic on the DS and sell it for thirty bucks. And do keep in mind that this is a DS game, where you're lucky if the framerate is higher than ten FPS and can remain stable throughout.

I expected a game where you could summon all kinds of crazy shit, have them interact with each other, and incorporating a puzzle element to it all. That's precisely what they delivered. The only thing worth dissecting here are the existential implications of nuking god while he's wrestling with an alligator.

My overall thoughts:

- Absolutely shitty controls. It would've been better with the D-Pad/ABXY pad for movement.
- Very good concept and done pretty damn well. Some objects are underwhelming and I wish they could've had customizable size, but whatever. I mean, you can summon longcat, Piano Cat, and a hover tank. That's pretty awesome.
- Some puzzles are so mindlessly dumb and others take a while. It evens itself out.
- Graphics are kinda bad. Seem pretty grainy and unpolished. But it's a decent compromise for the file size and graphics don't matter that much.
- Sound is decent, not bad, not good. Upbeat and a little repetitive.

I'm playing it in spanish. It kinda sucks this way, all the cool things are in english (I haven't been able to find the shrink ray in spanish).

And most puzzles are solved with a jetpack, a toaster (to kill fishes in water), a shovel, and a rope. Really, most puzzles are solved this way. And when trying to solve them 3 times, you can change the colour of the metal doors and the game will think they are different objects. This is how I beat the button pushing level. (Fishing rod solves other problems too).

Some objects are so incredibly small that you cant help but touch the background when trying to do something with it. And when this happens, all that you were planing to do goes to hell because maxwell decided to get to the point you touched, breaking everything in the way, even if it means jumping in a sea infested with sharks!

It's hard for me to forgive this game. I'm not having that much fun. It's actually pretty frustrating that things dont work the way you want them to. I'll keep playing though, try to change my mind.

Oh. And if you dont want to use the jetpack, use the neogaf. It's pretty much the same.

This game in my opinion holds up to most of the hype it got

I can do everything I plan to

try typing in "wings" and you'll get... FLYING WINGS

I fell in love with this game after I summoned anonymous and god and 2 assault rifles to take out cthulhu and a troll.

While some objects don't work the way I expect them to, some work even better than I would..

For instance, "PARACHUTE" gave me a backpack that opens when I'm falling, very nice.

And yep, specially in the first world, "jetpack" and "rope" are used a lot.. but one of the coolest things in the game is trying to use unconventional ways to solve stuff.

Loving this game. Definetely living up to the hype.

for example, on the level with the stack of bottles, i dropped an anvil, then a bowling ball, an elephant and lastly i used termites to eat the legs of the stack. all gave me the starite.

awesome game.

sum stuff:

the game definitely lived up to its hype. it should have a tiny tweak on the controls, like making arrows movement and jumping, and the buttons camera, but it's a good game nevertheless.

it has nearly limitless vocabulary with only a few synonyms (like crate and box) but the others I found to not be in the game's dictionary, at least to the way I would phrase it (jumbo jet would find no phrase and instead give me a "jet", which is good enough)

the problem is that I that I can't find more creative and effective words to use to solve levels (you can blaze through most using just: wings, pterodactyl, bridge ladder, air vent, rope, and dragon)

you can cheat... kinda by doing stuff like spawning a dragon next to an enemy and having it destroy it, then pick it up until all enemies are destroyed, then trash the dragon... or make the starite come to you using air vents.

the levels help give more useful ideas since all of the levels objects and creatures can be identified with the magnifying glass.

adding adjectives like big or large to some words will make them actually larger

hazmat suit, glasses, and crowbar = gordon freeman

wand turns anything living into a frog, simplifying dragonesque tasks.

shrink ray and paint for the win (but I wish there were more colors of paint...)

and anyone beat the last puzzle: "write the answer" with the 3 main developers in the level with a white space background?
