The controls and A.I on this game are barbaric. It's definitely extremely messy and unpolished, but with as many objects/people/things as it has, I'm really not surprised. Nor do I expect much more from it.
The puzzles/action levels are extremely fun, amd kept me coming back. But seriously, it's definitely not GOTY material.
Innovative, yes. I can't imagine it scoring in the 9's, as it can be a bit unpleasant at times.
It's giving me a good reason to keep my DSi in use (finally)
Wow. Someone else with some common sense finally. Truly, I thought I was the only one not stricken by the hype machine for this game. I was incredibly excited for the game before it hit, but that doesn't make me blind to its faults -- and it has faults. The A.I. and physics are almost broken, making a lot of the levels rely heavily on luck. The things I've had to do in order to get through many of the levels are ridiculous, and most of my success has been based on accidental actions, rather than creativity.
The main thing I have a problem with, though, is the camera. Not sure whose idea it was to force the camera to snap back after a few seconds, but it sucks major balls -- seriously. I want to be able to sit and contemplate how to best negotiate an obstacle and what have you, and though this might seem like a minor thing, it isn't.
No, if it seems like I'm bashing the game, well, I'm sorry. I think it's got a lot of charm, there's tons of value here, and I'd still buy it and recommend it to people. But I think its main value comes from being a toy you can tinker with. The puzzle levels are cleverly designed, but the mechanics don't match up well with what you're tasked to accomplish. It's great, though, that you can create your own levels, and obviously the premise of the game itself is awesome. But people who deny the game has issues suffer from an inability to enjoy a game that has flaws. I'm enjoying Scribblenauts and I'll continue to fool with it, but it's broken in many ways. It feels very amateurish from a design standpoint. Still very creative, but I think they should have involved some more experienced game makers in the production of this game.
