I got Alone in the Dark to work as a test run but haven't tried anything else because I started working on something else (the thing below)

Bro, I have been pulling my hair out trying to get SOTN Ultimate working, the "Castlevania - Nocturne in the Moonlight Ultimate Edition Hack" right? I've tried everything, it's why I wanted v1.3 to see if that would work, it didn't. I can make and install the NSP, I can launch it on switch and the emulator starts with the controls screen, but then crashes as soon as the actual game tries to start. Every single time no matter what I try, Could you help me out with that? I am very interested in Princess Crown and it's English patch as well.

Grab the Saturn2Nsp v1.2 from the this post https://www.logic-sunrise.com/news-1172726-switch-saturn2nsp-v12.html

No worries—I can only help with v1.2. Before we dive in, it's been a while since I got the 'Ultimate SOTN' setup working, so I want to make sure we're talking about the same version. Is it the one with translucent effects, English menus, and English voice acting? If so, then yes, I got that one running. And yep, I also got the English version of Princess Crown working.

For Princess Crown:

  • Put your prod.keys and keys.dat in the tools folder and the folder where the Create_Saturn_NSP_v1.2.bat file is.
  • The ID number that worked for me was 40.
  • For publisher, just enter "SEGA".
  • I disabled the screen menu, then ran "Make the NSP".
  • Use my PNG file (attached) for the cover—using JPGs caused the NSP to crash in my tests."
Your Princess Crown.NSP should be 653 MB

I typed out some issue I was having but gbatemp wouldn't let me post it. Do you thing we could DM here or connect on discord to help me troubleshoot? You're the only person I found who seems to know how to work these tools

Have you followed my steps? Honestly, I'd rather keep the conversation here so everything's documented — it'll help my future self if I ever need to make another Sega Saturn .nsp, lol.

Yeah I followed them, I'll try to post it again

So I'm having problems even getting v1.2 functioning right.. seems to be a new set of problems

So whenever I start the .bat process and type 1 to create my NSP, I get the "Your NSP is decrypted !!" message just fine, but after that nothing seems to working as it should, I try to change ID and I get this message:

"The system cannot find the file specified.
JScript runtime error opening input file: File not found
The system cannot find the file specified."

But it still lets me continue, I type in the name > it continues > I type in the publisher and after that I get

"The system cannot find the file specified.
ERROR
ERROR
ERROR
ERROR
ERROR
ERROR
ERROR
The system cannot find the file specified."

Yet it still lets me continue, I then put in my image:

"The directory name is invalid.

The system cannot find the path specified.
0 file(s) copied."

and once I get to the options part I just get errors and "The directory name is invalid." messages and If I generate the NSP I get a 4kb file.

I have everything I need, I have cotton boomerang in tools file, I have my bin and cue files in game folder, I have my prodkeys in tools and keysdat. I didn't have the prods or keys files in the main folder as well but I put them there after you suggested it but I'm still getting the same errors. I don't know what I'm doing wrong.

And yeah that's the same version of SOTN I'm talking about too. I'm still trying that one first and haven't tried Princess yet as Saturn2NSP 1.2 isn't even working yet. 1.3 worked but not for SOTN.

If you got Princess Crown working, then Symphony of the Night (SotN) should work too.
The issue could be related to the game ID, the cover image, or the patched/hacked ISO you're using.

Can you try running it on an emulator first to confirm it works?
Later, I can share the file size of my SotN.nsp and what the title screen says, just to make sure we’re using the same version.

Last edited by dragonz,
Try "Princess Crown" option first.

I'm on Windows 10, so make sure your system has the necessary updates installed. If you look back a few pages, you'll see that I had to update mine just to be able to rename the game title displayed on the game's screen.

I can post some screenshots of how my setup files look—maybe that could help.
That would be great, and do you know what page that was on?

Read my edited message above.

If you still want to update v1.2
Post in thread 'Saturn emulation using Cotton/Guardian Force testing and debug' https://gbatemp.net/threads/saturn-...-force-testing-and-debug.600756/post-10506389
Tried creating Princess but nothing changed, I tried making games I know work and worked on v1.3 like Alone on the Dark but Saturn2NSP behaved the same way. I installed .NET 5.0 SDK but still the same errors and issues as before. Satrun 2 NSP just must be missing something... Learning that I needed .NET 5.0 SDK is making me wonder if there are other programs my computer is missing. I think I may try all this on another PC. and yeah, SOTN does open and run on an emulator.

Thanks for trying to help me btw

Hi, I'm using NS 1.2 and compile my Saturn game but it keeps saying Error.

The system says it failed to match key. It will still say "Your NSP is decrypted". When I change ID of NSP, it says "The system cannot find the file specified." It still allows me to put the Rom and Developer name. But I still keep getting the same message "The system cannot find the file specified. With 6 lines saying errror.

I put my prod.keys and the rom inside the tools folder. And to test, I put the bin and cue files for Sonic 3D Blast. I compiled it into a NSP and tried installing on my switch. And when I do, it says it installed, but won't appear on switch menu. Does anyone know how to solve this or did anyone in the past have the same issue and fix it?
Were you ever able to figure out hot to resolve this issue? I am experiencing the same thing

Hold on, bro —

I’m starting to think that the “Ultimate” version might not actually work on the Switch. I might have a slightly different version instead — I’ll need to double-check when I get home.

From what I remember, I might actually have two versions:

One that’s partially in English and has translucent effects

And another that’s fully in English but without the translucent effects.

I’ll need to confirm though, because as far as I recall, the “Ultimate” version relied on the 4MB RAM expansion. Even if you try to enable that using saturn2nsp, it ends up failing.

Anyway, I hope I can continue helping you out with this stuff later on!

I'm not sure if this is the "ultimate version" you mentioned. If it is, then I can confirm that it is possible to make it with SATURN2NSP V1.3, although I still prefer to do the unpacking and packaging myself because I can customize many elements.

It's all good. Saturn2NSP v1.2 is just a no go for me. I tried on a different PC, I even tried prod.keys from another modded switch entirely, nothing. No matter what I do 1.2 fails to create any type of NSP of any Saturn game, hacked or not. If I were to guess there is some sort of mismatch going on with the prod.key and the cotton boomerang NSP ( and yeah boomerang is installed on both switches that I tried). Just based off of reading the script of 1.2 on where and what was failing.
All is well though if you have a different version of SOTN working anyway, it's the Ultimate hack that I'm really trying to get functional and if it's not that one that you got working then I don't really need 1.2 because 1.3 works just fine for me.

I believe that one is the extended version, there exists two hacks for the Japanese version of SOTN. I need to look up exactly what all the differences were but if I remember correctly, the extended version has text translated but the voice lines are still in Japanese. The Ultimate version not only has all text and voice (pulled from the PSP version) translated, it actually has new additional content and a ton of other improvements and features. I got the Ultimate version to run via retroarch on the switch at a 'tolerable' state, but the slight stuttering is enough to be annoying. The Yabuse core for retroarch (on switch) just isn't very good. there are no other emulator altertives besides this create your own NSP being done here. But the game only crashes once launched.
Note: there is a Yabuse emu for switch that uses Lakka but that is ran through an entirely different OS than Atmosphere and I'm not interested in that, I want it running on the emmunand of the switch.

If anyone comes across this and reads it, and you think you can get the Ultimate hack of the Japanese version of Symphony of the Night (called Nocturn in the Moonlight) working and running well on the Switch please let me know

I have that version installed as well.

Unfortunately, it’s not the "ultimate" version I was hoping for.

On the bright side, while searching for the ultimate edition, I stumbled across some interesting PS1 hacks—one that makes Maria playable, a Richter hack, and even a version called Scarlet of SOTN that includes a sort of balance patch. I might have to give those a shot, since I’ve always preferred the PSX version of Symphony of the Night anyway.

Here is where to get the Ultimate version

https://retrogametalk.com/repositor...ka-no-yasoukyoku-english-patched-meduza-team/

Based on the video you provided, it seems to be the same ROM version I used to create this game. It does include some added content like "Hard Mode." This patch comes from romhacking. Here's the link: https://www.romhacking.net/hacks/6184/ You can check to see if it's the version you want. If it is, it can indeed be created and run properly using saturn2nsp. If not, you can give me a download link so I can help you test it.

I think I posted it right as you replied, but here it is again. The ultimate version

https://retrogametalk.com/repositor...ka-no-yasoukyoku-english-patched-meduza-team/

Based on the video you posted, I can clearly see it does say “Ultimate” — see the attached screenshot for reference.

The version we have on the Switch is labeled “Extended 1.5,” not “Ultimate.”

Now that I think about it, I remember trying everything to get the Ultimate version working on the Switch as well, but had no luck.

It seems this link is no longer valid.
Oh that's right. It's a site called Retro Game Talk, it's what CDromance transitioned into, it's the same person and same site. But this time you're required to have an account to access the repository. Until you do the link probably wont work for you. You can google Retro Game talk, go to the site and search "Akumajou Dracula X - Gekka no Yasoukyoku" and find the Saturn Ultimate hacked version. But before you can use the search you will need to make an account. I'll try to find another way to share it with you

Okaaaay so..

I was able to officially get Castlevania - Nocturne in the Moonlight Ultimate to run as a stand alone NSP using Satrun2NSP v3.1 with a few caveats:

You have to use the 1.0 version. Back in Jan 2024 is when the Meduza Team released the patch 1.0 initially, then later in Feb 2024 they released a new patch v1.1 with a few more bug fixes and a slightly different hard mode. I realized I never tried 1.0 so I gave it a shot and low and behold it worked.
The caveats are that some of the emulator functions don't work. If you try to use the 'Quick Save' or 'Quick load" Function, or try to 'Reset' in the emulator menu, the game with just crash. Besides that everything works just fine. So if you are okay not having save states then this will work for you! I retried doing v1.1 just in case I did something else 'right' that I didn't catch but no it still crashed. So it's just the differences in the two versions I guess. No idea what would cause that..

Here are the v1.1 changes if anyone is curious:
  • Increased overall performance in the game (increased CPU frequency);
  • Removed voids at the top of the screen in some locations; 
  • Improved “Hard Mode” (enemies deal 2X damage); 
  • Added translucency of clouds against the background of the moon (flickering); 
  • Added translucency to the large window in Count Dracula's apartment; 
  • The name of the current location is now displayed in teleport rooms; 
  • Fixed the flame palette in the prologue (before the picture burns); 
  • Fixed a bug with the palette of a huge skull in an inverted castle; 
  • Fixed minor bugs in pop-up messages;
So those are features you wont have, nothing really to cry about.

The game runs really well so far with no hiccups! granted I just got it going but from what I can tell everything is smooth

Wow, this is amazing!

Just to clarify:

You used Team Medusa’s version 1.0 patch, right?
Not the latest release?

And you managed to get the PSP English voices working? That’s awesome!

What settings did you use for Saturn2NSP?
(e.g. 4MB RAM expansion, widescreen support, etc.)

Also, does Saturn2NSP v3 have an option to disable the Cotton menu screen from always appearing?
I know that option exists in Saturn2NSP v2, but I haven’t seen it in v3.

Last edited by dragonz,
You can use the public build of CaVE to create these. It’s an easy step by step GUI with various customization.

It does not work, with a game that's supposed to be compatible (Sonic 3D Blast USA), CaVe closes/crashes at the last step and no NSP is created. I've been asking about it on the Discord a couple of times but got ignored. I guess it could also explain why people are still trying out the method in this thread.

  • Fixed minor bugs in pop-up messages;
So those are features you wont have, nothing really to cry about.

The game runs really well so far with no hiccups! granted I just got it going but from what I can tell everything is smooth
It is confirmed that as you said, if you use the 1.0 patch, it can run well. However, if you use the 1.1 patch, after debugging, you can only get an error warning or a black screen.
