Hi there,
Softmodded my Wii a few years ago. And been using the USB Loader Gx without any problems until recently.

I load WBFS games from a USB flashdrive, the games appear in the loader home screen, but when I click them, it appears to load but brings me back to the homebrew menu again.

So I tried updating to a newer version of USB Loader Gx (1271),
I tried checking the drive for errors
I formatted the drive as FAT and tried putting games on it with Wii Game Manager and Wii Backup Manager (fomatting again between the two tries).

Still no luck.

Not sure if there is something with the IOS that has gone wrong, says it loads IOS58 at startup

And its the wrong d2x patch, beta53-alt has low drive compatibilty. d2x-v10-beta52 or v8 on Wii are recommended.

Only one patched IOS in a one slot would be enough if your drive would be fully compatible with this patch and no games are played that requires a specific IOS like 56 or 38. And the standard Slot is 249. So the used loader and game cIOS had to be changed manually in the settings of USB Loader.

Alright, gone through the guide and installed the new cIOS. Updated to the latest USB Loader GX, all through the guide with Modmii (must say I am overwhelmingly surprised by the comprehensive guide it generated).

I moved the games to my computer HDD.

Using Wii Backup Manager (0.4.5), formatted the USB to WBFS, and transfered some games in wbfs format to the USB drive.

Put in the correct port of the Wii console and tried running them through USB Loader GX without luck.

Is there any way in diagnosticing the USB drive to make sure it works?

If you wanna see if it's your HDD/USB loader gx you could try wiiflow and run games off your SD card

Tldr at the bottom...
...

ModMii currently provides a version of GX that is a couple versions behind the latest, it will get fixed in the next modmii update. But in the meantime make sure u have the latest GX from either @blackb0x 's signature or oscwii.org

So u are seeing games in GX when the drive is formatted as wbfs but not fat32? When it was working before all this started, how was it formatted? There is a compatibility list but it's pretty old. You could try running diagnostics on the drive using your computer, no such tools on the wii as far as I know.

Hmmm... here's an idea. You initially had d2x v10 beta53 alt installed to slot251, presumably u may have also has v10 beta53 installed to 249 and 250 before they got stubbed. Maybe this was intentional to get the drive working. It's very likely everything stopped working because your 249 got stubbed. Different versions of cios have different hdd and game compatibility.

Unfortunately until my next modmii update, modmii cannot easily build alternate versions of d2x cios's that aren't on the first page of the releases list from here https://github.com/davebaol/d2x-cios/releases

And v10 beta53 alt is on page 2.

ModMii can still build it though, u just need to download this zip...

https://github.com/davebaol/d2x-cios/releases/download/d2x-v10-beta53-alt/d2x-v10-beta53-alt.7z

And extract the d2x-v10-beta53-alt folder to modmii's installation folder under Support/More-cIOSs/d2x-v10-beta53-alt

Once here, u can start modmii, enter 4, then beta, and select it. Then u can download recommended cios's from download page 4, or you can run the syscheck updater wizard again and this time it will have u install the selected d2x version.

If that doesn't work, one final thing to try is installing cios 249 d2x v10 beta53 alt but with base 58. It sometimes has greater usb compatibility. Heck you could even try other cios's like hermes cios's typically installed to slots 222-224. You can enable Modmii's hermes cios option and it will be included in the recommended cios list in all of modmii's functions, or download them manually from page 4 or the advanced downloads page. I would test each of these twice, with the drive formatted as fat32 and also with it formatted as wbfs. Fat32 is ideal for a lot of reasons, but all the benefits mean nothing if your drive isn't compatible when formatted that way

Tldr, I suggest trying d2x v10 beta53 alt with base 56, 57, 38 and 58. If that doesn't work maybe try the recommended hermes cios's in slots 222-224. You could go nuts trying a ton of different cios options and you may get lucky with one that works. Test these out with your drive formatted as fat32 and wbfs just in case (fat32 preferred, but wbfs often has greater compatibility with small flash drives in particular). Also make sure you're running the latest gx from oscwii.org or blackb0x's signature

Edit: if none of this gets your drive working, you should revert to the recommended d2x v10 beta52 setup (or v11 beta 1) and try using a different drive or sd card. Heck if you have another drive handy u may want to do this anyway just to take advantage of all the benefits that both fat32 and the recommended cios have to offer

Edit2: the cios installers that run in the wii can be used instead of modmii if you prefer, end result will be the same

Why WBFS? Just curious.
Good question, I had the idea it was the best to use for the moment.

But I have also tried FAT32, still the same.

In the bottom of USB Loader it says something like 12 gb free of 14 gb, but among the channels only the typical Wii channels can be seen like News, Weather, Homebrew, etc.

Before the update of the cIOS the games were visible, but now they are not, for some reason.

This particular game says IOS version 17,

USB Loader Gx ver 3.0, rev 1281

I am not sure which setting to change, if there might be anything in the USB Loader settings. The WBFS files worked flawlessly before.

XFlak thank you, I'll try that.

No games are visible neither as formatted in WBFS or FAT32.

I formatted the drive as FAT and tried putting games on it with Wii Game Manager and Wii Backup Manager
Format it as FAT32 32kb cluster size, also check if it has only one partition.
So I put in the USB with the WBFS games on it. And ran USB Loader GX, and now, the games are not visible.
Do they appear in WiiBackupManager?
Does the usb flash drive pass the "usb initiation" screen without showing the countdown?
Also, check the usb drive path, it should be set to port 0.
Also, on one of the icons on the top banner (when in USBLoaderGX), make sure it's set to show "Wii games".

If you used Wii Backup Manager then you'll have game IDs in your folder titles, so that won't be the cause. But have you checked if the loaders configured to display Wii games?

You could just delete the entire usbloader_gx folder and reinstall USB Loader GX r1281.

d2x-v10-beta52 or v8 on Wii are recommended
I know it's not as widespread yet, but d2x-v11-beta1 is based on v10-beta52 and it contains additional bug fixes. So it should also be a reliable option.

If you wanna see if it's your HDD/USB loader gx you could try wiiflow and run games off your SD card
USB Loader GX can also play Wii games from SD cards now.
