How does your post make any sense?
Google Translate IS bad for translating cause it spits out things just as foreign as what you put in.

Example, Inori wanted to scare me so she told me to put this into google translate:
????
Google said it means, "Carp Hearts" Wtf is a carp heart?
when in truth, it means "First love/puppy love".

Google has an issue with katakana, it seems. I don't think I would've actually understood what it meant until I actually read it. IMO, if you wanted to say that, ???? or ?? would've been better. I can see what Google did spit out "Hearts", due to ??. To begin with, translation sounds funky to begin with- That's why games are usually localized instead of translated. As my post stated, it isn't bad for translation, as long as you actually know some Japanese. Google Translate ALONE is bad, but it is workable if you have some knowledge. Although, if you do have knowledge, there probably isn't a point to using it.

Er... what?
I know Japanese and I didn't understand and won't even try to understand Google Translate. Eh, but since the lovely, very nice Inori decided to make my head explode, even if you do have knowledge of Japanese, which she also has, you put Japanese into google translate and it comes back out in crap. Even she had a hard time deciphering it, so instead of doing so, we laughed about google translate all night. Translations aren't funky if you're good at English as well as Japanese. Not to mention, if they are funky, why make them funki-er with google translate?

Let's say the translation is, "I wish I could cool off."
In google translate, google would probably say, "I wish I was that cool."
If the previous sentence was, "It's hot as balls in sweatpants in the summertime."

"It's hot as balls in sweatpants in the summertime. I wish I was that cool."
How would that make any sense?

You'd have to be good at Japanese to translate Japanese.
A machine can't do that for you, only a person with Japanese knowledge can.

Inori showed an example where machine translation failed at hiragana as well. Don't know if Inori used google to translate that text though.

I have no idea what he means. Usually localized games, are translated.

Localized games are translated, but localization goes an extra step further to adapt the translation to the location it is being released in. One thing that happens it that foreign idioms/puns/common sense is often removed and replaced with regional variants or the closest thing in target language.

Ex. "Kanazuchi" is translated as "Iron Hammer", but in fact is often used to refer to being a bad swimmer.


@seatab: Sorry. BTW, how is your application handling this? Is it safe to assume that it requires the nds file to be decompressed/unpacked first?

It looks like it runs using .Net- Do you think that a Mono port would be possible?

I just use ndstool for unpacking/packing the ROM and it just works fine, but I also have several other tools for unpacking the game archives, the text editor itself operates on the language files the game has in its archives.

I'm not really doing anything special in any of the tools, I'd imagine they could work just fine under Mono, but I have not recently used *nix or OSX as a desktop operating system in a very long time so I have no experience with Mono's implementation of WinForms/etc.

But well... you can run without R button anymore, but L button still use for selecting item.
