Hi. I want to buy Xbox360 and install drive firmware on it. Can you tell me which is the easiest drive version to do so?
How to recognize that version at the store?
To install firmware you must have HDD version?

I know all the answers are somewhere on this forum but after reading few posts I'm more confusing.

Well, the only drive I've ever flashed was the Benq drive in my 360. It was easy as hell. Hooked it up to my PC, started up DOSflash32, turned on my 360, saved original firmware, patched it, and flashed it. Takes me no more than 2 minutes now.

I dont think there is anyway to tell just by looking in the store. I suggest hitting up a place that has some old stock because most of these new boxes have that newer Hitachi drive that requires a passkey and soldering to flash.

To install the firmware, you must have the version specific to whatever drive you are using. Samsung, Hitachi, or Benq.

Most newer boxes don't have hitachi , it's a total crap shoot like it's always been. Just as likely to pick a hitachi as you are a benq.

I guess....but I have 3 friends who all bought 3 new Arcades over the holidays. All them bitches had the Hitachi, I laughed

So you must remove the console from the box? Does it say on the back label? Manual? Or maybe you must run the console to find out?
Please help. Saturday mourning I'm buying one!

AFAIK the only way to tell is by hooking up the console and ejecting the DVD drive to look at what version you have.

Unless there is some kind of serial number database around the place?

Try checking xbox-scene.com

you'll most likely get a Benq...
and thats what you want, they are a breeze to flash and almost risk-free.

you can cross reference the lot number of the benq drives to give you an idea on what type of drive it has by the barcode

ie. country/team/lot no.

so you should be able to tell what drive u are likely to get from the barcode.

then again, you can always return your xbox if you get a hitachi drive, just make sure u keep the receipt.

Most of the newer consoles tend to have a Benq, because it is the most reliable and quite of the 3.
I bought my elite 1.5 months ago and i got a Benq..

(i hope someone sees this...) so my question is: i have an xbox 360 flashed with ixtreme 1.2 rev2 (hitachi drive), and i download songs for rockband, but if one day i get banned from xbox live, can i still download songs using my gamertag and hard drive with a friends unbanned xbox 360???

Wrong. When you get banned, only your CONSOLE gets banned. Your harddrive is still good and you can take it to ur buds house, download what u want and bring it home to the banned one.
