Just for fun I tried with browserhax. Doesn't work either.
Does having a save file on the cartridge really affect it?

I read that I'd need to delete the updates to play NEO Y.
Can I make a backup of the update or will I have to download it from eShop again when I decide to go back to vanillaY?

Rutile would black screen after loading if I had a save file, but it would still load.

You have to delete the updates. They can be reinstalled at any time though when you want to play vanilla.

Everything I try just has HANS reboot back to HBL.

Most likely because the pokemon games have you select your language at the start, and can already be played as others on any region.
