Rockstar skipping E3 this year

Just about the entire industry will be at E3 in a couple of weeks -- except for, evidently, Rockstar. The company has revealed that they'll be skipping E3 this year, instead deciding to show off the latest progress on Max Payne 3 and the long-in-development L.A. Noire at their own demos "in the coming weeks."

"In the end, we feel we simply don't have enough time to show as much as we would like in the time available," said a Rockstar spokesperson to CVG about their decision to skip E3. They gave no specific indication about just how soon after E3 they'll be ready to show off the latest builds of both Max Payne 3 and L.A. Noire -- the latter of which has been in development since way back in 2006, and still hasn't had a significant public showing.

On top of Rockstar's decision to skip E3, there's also a rumor that they were planning a new game announcement at the show that has now been canceled. VG247 reports that Rory Buckeridge, associate editor of U.K. publication Nuts, tweeted that Rockstar has "pulled their E3 game launch." It's kind of a moot point now, but with Rockstar electing not to have a presence at E3 at all, whether they actually did have a new game announcement planned may never be known.

Of course, just because Rockstar doesn’t plan to show off these games themselves doesn’t necessarily mean the games won’t show up. After all, they could always crop up during Microsoft and Sony’s press conferences. In fact, this will most likely be the case with either the unofficial-yet-obviously-in-development Grand Theft Auto V, or the PlayStation 3 exclusive, 1970s crime title Agent. Remember that Microsoft officially announced Grand Theft Auto IV during their E3 press conference back in 2006.
