Reverse-engineered code for 'Grand Theft Auto III' and 'Vice City' get a DMCA takedown notice

gta reverse engineered.JPG

Earlier this week, we reported that the source codes for Grand Theft Auto III and Grand Theft Auto Vice City were fully reverse-engineered and made available to download as re3 and reVC respectively. However, their availability was short-lived as Take-Two Interactive, the publisher of the series, seems to have taken notice of this homebrew activity and issued a DMCA takedown, making the repository unavailable. The message below can be seen if you visit the page:

Take-Two's request is also publicly available and reads:

The content in the links below consists of copyrighted materials owned by Take-Two. The use of our copyrighted content in these links are unauthorized and it should be removed immediately.

You can read the rest of the request here.

This takedown might put a halt to modding efforts (at least for those who did not have access to the GitHub repository before the DMCA notice) but the original modders might come with a cleaner reversed code that could be legally shared. That, however, remains to be seen.

fuuuuckkkkkkkk i never downloaded it bc i was waiting to buy the games on steam :cry::cry:
This is far from the first time a takedown has come for a piece of homebrew, fan game, ROM hack or similar, and usually it is for games far less popular than this (you should see Tetris vs the world of Tetris homebrews, they have been gunning for things for years -- my favourite to see it happen being Tetris the Grand Masters on the DS by meraman).

Short version. If you are big enough and ugly enough to find a ROM collection then you will similarly not have too much troubling finding this. How far development will go in the future... unknown and probably less than had it been more open and able to do public collaborations, though I doubt that will deter too many people.

I went to auction at a mom/pops video game store few months ago that was closing, and bought 11 slims for $200, 1 was DOA but 10 work fine. so hella deal. Already rgh3'ed 8 of them. But most younger kids don't even want anymore, unless it plays stupid "fortnight", or newer shit.
