Emulation retroarch V homebrew emulators

Trying to get a good retro gaming setup up on my wii u u can someone tell me the pros and cons between using retroarch V homebrew emulators on vwii?

Also wat would be a good controller to use the classic or wii u pro ?

gamepad is pretty sweet. I love retroarch, but its quite wonky. I have to keep a fully configured retroarch cfg on my sd card, because sometimes, it corrupts and I need to do some file deleting and renaming and swapping
