I have a strange problem and have been trying to look up info on it to see if anyone else has encountered something similar but haven't had success. I keep my ROMs (ZIP format) in very organized folders per system. I install Retroarch on my Switch SD (formatted in Fat32) and put all my ROM folders into a /rom folder in the Retroarch folder. When I load up Retroarch on my Switch (using title redirection) and go to scan for content - folders that are there just won't show up. It's like I never even put them on the SD. If I use any other file browser on my Switch I can see everything just fine. Once in a blue moon I've managed to get a folder to show up in the Content Scan and it scans and plays perfectly fine. Others just won't show up. It seems totally arbitrary but there must be something I'm missing. It's driving me bonkers cuz I'd love to use my Switch as my main emulation machine and, besides this one issue, it seems to work great.

Edit: I've tried using Playlist Buddy and the Online Generator. The playlists show up but nothing runs since it claims it can't find the file.

On a Windows 10 PC, unfortunately. Thanks for the reply, though! I'm totally stumped on this and can't find anything else like it online. :/

Are you doing a manual scan? Only do manual scans for your roms. Or you can just manually create playlists with 3rd party apps (but now when manual scan is a thing, you don't really need that).

Tried third party apps (Playlist Buddy and the Online Generator) and they create playlists but once those playlists make it onto the Switch, they don't work claiming that the files can't be found. Might just give up on the whole thing.

DO MANUAL SCAN inside RA. You might have messed up some info while making playlists with 3rd party apps.

Um, I have a question: where do I have to copy the GlideN64 ini files to apply the game fixes for some of the N64 games for the Mupen64Plus-Next core?

Are you using a Mac? Sounds like the "archive bit" issue. Quite annoying, but also simple to fix:
https://gbatemp.net/threads/how-to-fix-archive-bit-for-all-sd-files-and-folders.515258/

To avoid all this, I actually use a virtual machine (parallels) exclusively for copying files to my switch's SD card :/

Nah. I am on macOS.. Easy to fix it is use app called CleanEject. When you use external hard drive, flash drive, flash drive with sd card insert in it and click CleanEject and it will take take care of it less than few seconds. No problem for me. Great tool and lightly for macOS users.

So I used Playlist buddy to create some playlists for GBA, GB/GBC, and DS games. But I'm not sure how to use the created playlist and thumbnails. They made the folders in retroarch/cores but when I open Retroarch there's nothing that pops out at me as them being used. Do I have to enable them somehow?

is it common for others to have retroarch constantly crash? i load a n64 game, close content then load another n64 game and it crashes and the system needs a full reboot. i just dont use retro because of this, ive updated all the cores and assets and so on as well of course, theres nothing for me to update. happened again last night after doing all the updates again too,

What CFW are you using?
What version of RA are you using?
How do you start RA?

Kosmos 15.4
firmware 9.2
load it through HB menu, normal mode, not in applet mode.
1.8.5 for RA

also updated everything in the update section of the options screen in RA itself too, even updated the cheats.

I don't know what else to check. You seem to be doing everything right, at least that I know of.
I assume you are using branded sd cards like Sandisk?

RA used to crash like this for me but on older builds and before n64 got dynarec.
1.8.5 is quite stable. I get the odd crash on n64 during gameplay for some games.

Sorry can't help any more

...No, N64 has always been the most unstable core of them all. Loading multiple games (or sometimes even loading out of Mupen) tends to cause either app crashes or fatals.
Can confirm on multiple nightlies and stables, ever since the Dynarec was implemented.

Someone has probably answered this (sorry I cant find it). I am using retroarch beetle pce and with full ram acess its running games well however my dracula x file save appears to be...temporary...it did save but then gone next session.

There appears no way to create a save state or get to this emulators menu or even exit it properly? Is it possible for someone to enlighten me here??

Thanks!
