So I bought a random one on Amazon and it ended up failing spectacularly: getting stuck in slot, frying itself, and the micro sd in it

I was wondering if anyone has any specific recommendations

Is this it?

I have three of them, and they all work perfectly. The technology behind them is very banal and simple; I don't understand why they don't work in your case.

1) What size is the micro-SD used? Some only accept those of 32 GB or less;
2) Did you insert the SD correctly into the adapter?
3) Did you format the micro SD using the PSP (not the PC)?
4) If it got stuck in the slot, maybe you put it backwards, and forced it in?
5) What do you mean it fried itself?

If you are looking for help, try to be technically precise, and don't talk nonsense.

that's more of a quirk with the PSP itself tbh, things generally get less stable over 32gb and some games just refuse to recognize free space and refuse to create a save file thinking there's not enough free space left

Yes it was the adapter Nikokaro posted
The problem wasn't the sd card it was the adapter
It was working fine for a while but randomly it like slipped on the spring mechanism for the memory stick slot in the psp or something, I had to get some tweezers to remove it from my psp, and afterwards it didn't work anymore

How did it slip randomly?
Nah, rather, the last time you will have inserted it absentmindedly (a little inclined, not perpendicularly) and you will have stuck it outside the spring. Make sure you didn't damage the spring when you pulled it out with tweezers.
You can order an identical one, and always be very careful when inserting and removing it, assuming you haven't already damaged the spring in the slot.

If anyone wants to recommend another brand, please come forward, but the adapter size is identical, so it could still get stuck out of the spring if done carelessly. 🤷

They're all kind of cheap crap (as SD adapters tend to be) but I seem to remember the PhotoFast adapters were regarded as the best. I'm not sure if you can get those anymore, though.

I think officially the PSP is supposed to support 64 GB.
Above that, there is a cfw plugin that supposedly enables larger sizes. Or at least that was the case on m33 cfw (my PSP has no battery so I can't update it from 5.00)

i had 64gb recenty and it was very very unstable, i had to downsize to 32gb to stop getting errors about not having enough free space and to shorten the loading time for the game list, though i don't use ARK or M33, i have LME on 6.60

It is always better to have several medium-sized micro SD cards rather than a large one (there are those who use even 1 TB SD card on psp). In the event of corruption of the entire SD card (which will happen sooner or later, as various users often report) not all files (roms, isos and saves) would be lost. Better safe than sorry. 🤔
