I bought this r4 a while ago off some website and im almost one hundred percent sure that they scammed me with this R4 Renovation clone. This clone on start up in the DS says Star Wars Lethal Alliance and whenever i start up the card it does not work. I read online and they said i should use firmware 1.34 with this clone.

But I'm just wondering if any kernal or firmware would work on any r4 card. Also, if anyone has experiences with r4 clones and know what programs i should download to make this work would help out big time.

Or if someone can explain to me what kernals and firmware are.

What's kinda' funny is the original was the "R4 Revolution". "Renovation" was somebody trying to copy the name and not realizing they weren't the same words since they weren't a native english speaker.

The "firmware" is the data stored on the cart itself. This is responsible for bypassing DSi and 3DS firmware update blocks.

(When a cart is blocked the DSi or 3DS will give you a generic error message on a black screen.)

The kernel/software/menu, on the other hand, is the collection of files stored on the MicroSD that's responsible for giving you the menus and loading games (and disabling the anti-piracy code in the games so they run). This is often called "firmware" by mistake. Again, these things come from china and proper english is the exception rather than the norm.

As far as alternate firmwares, usually YSmenu with the RGF updates is used for carts without any support... if it works.

(It's linked in number 5 there.)
There used to be Wood for other carts, but that went closed-source and stopped porting to new carts ages ago, and is only supported on three R4-named carts (R4iDS.CN, R4iDSN.COM, and the original basic R4).

People that have a cart with no proper support and without the ability to run alternate softwares usually just give in and buy a new one from a team that's still giving support.

Ok, so it looks like a need to find a kernel for this card that will work, and then once i find the kernel i should get new card firmware and it hopefully, will work? Have any ideas for kernels to download? Thanks for all the help as well.

While kernels can run on multiple carts, firmware updates cannot. They're tied to specific cart models, so the only firmware updates you can get will be for your model (usually from the site printed on it).

However it doesn't sound like you need new firmware right now, the white screen is because the DS tries to run it (you're not getting the error message), but the cart doesn't start up because it's missing the software on the MicroSD.

As for Kernels, the only ones are an old version of Wood, and the RGF updates I linked.

Okay, i tried an earlier version of wood from this site: http://www.r4ds.me/download/r4ds.html
I choose v1.18 kernel, and i downloaded the files and extracted all of them into the root of my micro sd and im still getting the white screen. Am I missing something here with installing kernels

The 1.18 there isn't Wood, it's the old R4 kernel.
http://filetrip.net/nds-downloads/flashcart-files/download-wood-r4-151-f30587.html
There's the filetrip entry for Wood, you can try older versions with the version selector on the right side of the page.

Also, if the kernel/software won't work on a cart, then it won't start up (what you're experiencing).

Okay, I installed an earlier version of wood on my r4, and i still experienced the same thing. Are any more files needed then the one given in the download link you gave me? Or am i extracting/installing the kernel the wrong way. all i did was extract everything and put it in the root of the sd card with the _rpg folder, _DS_MENU file, changelog and readme. If I can't get it to work at all, whats the best r4 to get? Thanks for all your help.

You're extracting it the right way, it's not working because Wood won't run on that cart.

That has a list of recommended carts. The DSTwo's often considered the best.

Thanks, I knew something was weird with that. Also, where would i be able to buy the DStwo, because with my previous experience of buying r4s i want to be careful from where i buy it from. Canadian site preferably.
