This is probably stupid to ask, but if I get a Japanese game (a physical copy) what do I need to do to get it working? I already have a hacked 3ds, but I'm too stupid to know what to do with foreign games.

If you already have CFW (assuming you're running A9LH or B9S + Luma), you won't need anything. Just insert the cartridge and play. Luma CFW has on-the-fly region free patching.

Oh, I'm an idiot, so I forgot to mention its a DS game I plan to use in my 3ds. Idk if that would still be region locked. If it is, I'm guessing Luma would take care of it anyways? But I've heard mixed information on how it'd work in an unhacked 3ds. My friend I think is looking at getting the same game I'm getting, and looking into getting a 3ds. I'm not sure if she got the Japanese 3ds she was looking at or not. Anyways, is there a definitive answer whether foreign ds games work in 3ds's from a different country without hacking?

Even on 3ds's?
The only ones that would be region locked are DSi enhanced games, such as Pokemon Black and White. You can see they're DSi enhanced because they have TWL written on the label. Regardless, I think Luma patches allow you to play them.

as stated before DS games are not region locked, and yes, even if you are playing in brazil with a japanese console running an italian ds game (there is no region lock in the DS, you can play foreing ds games even in non hacked consoles)
