Hey guys,
I've been away from the Wii U scene for a few years... I was wondering... Is it now possible now to run Nintendont, have the Wii U gamepad as screen & controller and be able at the same time to load the GameCube games from the HDD instead of the SD card?

Thank you in advance

Yes to all!

The most popular method is to create a "Virtual Console" game on your own, and install that on your WiiU formatted HDD (needs Nintendont in your \app folder on your SD card):
e.g., https://gbatemp.net/threads/release-uwuvci-injectiine.486781

The other method is to run Nintendont from a Forwarder (with gamepad support; there are a lot of versions of that scattered around here on GBAtemp) that is installed on your NAND. Within Nintendont you can then select a game that is located on your Wii HDD (not WiiU HDD!) or SD card.

Thank you for your answer... But if I find one of these versions you're mentioning, will I be able to load the game from the fat formated HDD AND at the same time use the gamepad as screen + controller? Because the version I'm using, I'm able to load the games from the SD only and not the HDD...

That is actually a good question. iirc there was an issue with gamepad + games from hdd because Nintendont as a Forwarder is a Virtual Console and VCs don't have access to USB (or something like that).

I just check my setup (Nintendont v6.500):
- nintendont started from regular vWii: works with SD and HDD
- nintendont started from WiiU (Forwarder): only works with SD (error: "USB FAT device could not be opened.")

Since it works from regular vWii, the setup must - in principle - follow the rules to load from USB:
https://gbatemp.net/threads/nintendont.349258/#InstallUSB
-> seems to be the issue gamepad + hdd.

Gamecube (or any) injects are installed to your wii u hdd as they are converted to wup format to be installed to the wii u menu. The wii u usb can not read a fat device unless in vwii mode.

As they are injected you have the option of making gamepad support on or off (at least with Teconmoons injector). I play all my gamecube games with and on the gamepad.

hey all,

can you confirm if using the injection method, that the official gamecube adapter still works? or do i need to use the wii u forwarder and launch nintendont standalone in order to get usb support? it's my understanding that you lose usb support if you inject the gamecube game and launch it directly from wii u menu/hdd

Sorry to dig up this thread but in case someone else need an answer :
In Wii U VC mode you never loose usb support, you loose usb "drive" support. Just like in the Wii U menu when you can't use usb devices other than wiiu formated one

So, I have a USB drive - using SDIO's USB Partition plugin - that has my GC games on it. Am I right in understanding that I can't use the partition with my games on it if I want to play using the gamepad through a Wii U menu forwarder?

Well I think about it just yesterday lol, but 100% sure You can't use your FAT32 partition where your iso/wbfs are, but I don't know if the 2nd partion can be read by usb loaders since it is a proprietary format. Anyway you can't use PC or the vWii to transfer your game from your 1st partition to the 2nd since it can't be seen by anything except the Wii U. The only way i thought about is "what if I transfer a game using FTPiiU in usb1:/games/game.iso" But I never tried to do it and would be pretty time consuming.
I don't know if you know but You can still inject your game as Wii U VC title which mean every single game will show up in the Wii U homescreen but they would be in your Wii U USB drive partition
