the current private tracker I'm using for torrents has really upset me today. I got a warning for having two accounts, but I do not have two accounts. anyway, instead of arguing with them, I'm going to leave the site in the coming days. I've already donated about $300 to their site, but I do not want to support them anymore after this. I'm looking at using a vpn and maybe a non-private tracker. I have a question about vpn: I'm thinking about going with nord vpn for about $3/month, but what I don't understand is if I flip the switch so to speak with the app to enable vpn, does anything have to be done with programs? do I need to add them in manually for which will use the vpn and which won't? or is all traffic now private on my laptop? I want to at least add qbitorrent.

Oh Jesus - could you be any more obviously out to infringe *the laws in your region* while asking for the most plain and easy supportquestion google could probably help with?

So no well crafted answer from me - but I'm linking you a tool so you know that stuff like that exists:
    http://checkmyip.torrentprivacy.com/

Also - personally I hardly ever use torrents these days - just saying.

I use PIA, and it's literally just a switch. Click it, everything moves to the VPN like I connected to a new router. No effort.

I know your question is already answered but Atlas VPN and ExpressVPN are good options

thanks, is the app in question distributed with the vpn or is there a specific app I should download kinda like sabnzbd, which can be used for anything as no app comes with it usually, for usenet?

Well, AtlasVPN has the vpn distributed inside it and so does ExpressVPN. They are both very good at handling torrents. ExpressVPN has a 30 day free trial but AtlasVPN is cheaper but basically the same

Usually, with Nord and most of the VPN's out there, you will download a client, log in, click the location you want to appear to be from and boom! Done! All traffic is tunnelled through the VPN. Need VPN on the go on your phone download the app, log in, pick location and boom again! A lot of the larger VPN providers also have browser plugins if say you want to play a game without the lag-tax and want to watch Netflix from a different region :)

The simplest is to visit somewhere you shouldn't, and I'll leave that to your creative interpretation as to the destination.
In Asia it's easier because some usual sites are blocked, like Reddit, but in The States you will need to dig a little deeper.

Anecdotally, here in South East Asia, we don't really care about hiding Torrents because the laws are quite lax on that front, but the main use of VPNs is to access sites that are deemed off-limits by local Governments, for whatever reason.

That said, the fastest and most interesting way is to visit good-old Porn sites; they will tell you which country you're hailing from right off the bat.
If you can spot the notification over the content, that is ...

NordVPN actually allows you to select specific programs which will use the VPN if you don't want it to be on everything. And easiest way to tell if it's working is to check your IP before connecting and then after connecting, check it again. If it changed, it's working. You can check it on this website: https://whatismyipaddress.com/

The easiest way to check is to visit https://whatismyipaddress.com/ before you connect and note down your IP, close down your browser, connect to the VPN, and visit the site again

Being on a VPN should be seamless to not actually using one - you may see a little variation in your usual connection speed and the will be times where certain locations get absolutely hammered, just switch to another server in the country and you're away

so a vpn is like having a proxy? I've used free proxies in the past to get around file host limits. sometimes they worked out very well, but other times, they were unstable as hell. vpn isn't like that, is it?

They are similar but the long and short of it is VPNs are more secure. A VPN will encrypt all data between you and the servers you are connecting to. VPN's tend to work at the Operating system level of things whereas proxies are at the app level .
