Question about the Rumble on the Wii U Gamecube Controller adapter

Does the grey usb need to connect to the console for Rumble to be used or does it only need power and can be connected into any power source (i.e. another console)
Using one of the ports on the back for storage but I have a switch right next to it

Just use the two usb ports on the front of your Wii U next to the SD card slot.
