I'm asking because I bricked a wiiU once when I formatted it. (didn't realize how coldboothax worked at the time.) I wasn't sure if the new 3DS XL worked in a similar way. Can I just go to the 3DS's system settings and format or do I have to do another step first to prevent a brick? I'm looking to sell mine and I want it stock which is why I'm asking.

"Format System Memory" will not remove B9S and will not brick the system. This option just throws away the user profile and changes the encryption key.
Custom firmware has to be uninstalled separately (which makes zero sense and carries risks if done incorrectly).

And… yes, the good old "Back to stock – I want to sell!"
Selling a previously modded system without mentioning it isn't very nice in my opinion.

So I can just do format system memory and it will be fine then?

no because it wont uninstal B9S, and without the luma files it wont start (and if the luma files on CRT arent deleted by the format then it will stay hacked)
