Hardware Question about creating backups, and the SD Gecko

First off, the lack of topics I could find about ripping Wii disks leads me to think that this might be a disallowed topic of discussion, and if it is, I do apologise.

Anyway, been looking at ripping some and done some research and found that the usb or SD gecko seem to be the main ripping 'thing' of choice, but from what I can see the Gecko is just an SD card/microsd card holder. Is a Gecko needed to rip, or would any good quality SD card do? Also, is there any software needed other than the disk that comes with the Wiikey?

sd gecko was developed for the gc mem card slots so i guess its needed

I would get the USB gecko, if your Wii is near-ish your PC.

Dumping via the SD gecko route is kind of slow.

Well I use a laptop so comp location isn't a problem. What's the advantage with the USB Gecko? Let you copy straight from Wii to PC?

Pretty much. It just means no card swapping either - the biggest SD card you can use with the SD gecko is 2gb, so for a full 4.7Gb Wii image, you need to swap the card between the Wii and PC 3 times.
