I found my old psp (3003) after a few years of not being used but now I cannot get passed the initial setup as none of the buttons work except for the - volume and the brightness button. I cannot access the recovery menu with either holding the R button while booting or the start-select-square-triangle buttons.

Is my psp doomed? I was really hoping this thing is not a paperweight... please help!

Did you have a custom firmware installed? Do you know what firmware version you are on? Also, I’m pretty sure you already took out the memory stick and re-inserted it. And do you have one of those microsd to mms adapters? Those are super finicky.

thanks for the reply slaphappygamer! yes, did have a custom firmware. i think it was actually 6.60LME... it's been a while so I don't actually know which one exactly. is there a way to find this?
yes, I also have those adapters, the white one. i have not tried to place another memory card and try to boot because i thought there's no point since i cant even get past this screen.

yes, i've tried removing the memory card, reset the psp, took out battery, placed it back, just still can't get past the broke egg with choosing date as only the - volume button works and the brightness. i know there is nothing wrong with the rest of the buttons, it was fully working before and i kept my psp pristine. just not been used in a long while...

What happens when you boot psp while holding the “home” button? 6.60lme seems to be a temp cfw, as in you’ll have to reapply the patch when you restart your psp (which is the greatest handheld ever made).
i know right?! this is why i cannot accept that i killed it by not playing for a few years! :( i desperately want to revive it.
i just tried doing that and it still boots to broken egg initial setup, set time and date...
i'll try and see if i can reapply the patch somehow. will keep you updated. thank you so much again for trying to help! really appreciate it.

i really cant move past the initial setup... maybe i installed infinity on this one.. 6.61... i really don't know. my other psp still works and it's on 6.60lme.... it's frustrating... there must be a way to load past the initial setup screen...

Can you please send a screenshot of this “broken egg”? I don’t think I’ve seen that before. It doesn’t sound like it’s that blue screen.

I think L might actually be the recovery menu. I vaguely remember holding the psp with my left hand while booting.

also, I’d try to swap memory cards. Just to see what happens. I’m more than happy to help, but I think we need someone else to chime in. I’m not familiar with the lme firmwares
