Ever since Sony's big PlayStation 4 reveal a few weeks back, there's been a slow trickle of information regarding its upcoming console. Piece by piece, we're sizing up the final package.

Many companies have been pledging their support, N'-vidia is one of them.
Graphics card maker Nvidia has confirmed PhysX And APEX support for the PlayStation 4.

"Game designers use PhysX and APEX technologies for collision detection and simulation of rigid bodies, clothing, fluids, particle systems and more across a wide range of platforms, including desktop PCs, game consoles, and mobile and handheld devices," explained the firm.

"Taking PhysX technology content creation to the next level, NVIDIA APEX technology lets artists create intricate physics-enabled environments. They can expand the quantity and visual quality of destructible objects; make smoke and other particle-based fluids integral to game play; and create life-like clothing that interacts with the character's body to achieve more realism in their games," it added.

Here's a video demonstration of PhysX in action.

All in all, their presence is definitely a positive sign. I like seeing Nvidia going the PhysXtra mile here, and the fact that they threw in APEX support proves that they're not monkeying around. Beyond that, it's always good to hear that developers have more to work with, and I'm sure we'll see some dazzling sights in the years to come. If the console can provide a steady stream of quality games, it should have a bright future.

TL,DR:

This makes me think it's going to be even more expensive than what I initially thought.

Quite frankly, that's scary.

And yes, I'm poor.

I wonder how the PC-master-race will greet it's tiny distant cousin of a PS4.

Probably with distant laughter if Sony doesn't push for mod-support. Or complete distant sorrow if they do (and capitalize upon/butcher the user-centric side of things).

Well, I don't know you but I almost prefer that demo without PhisX.
Maybe I am being nostalgic of old times where we bothered more about story and gameplay than graphics or I am getting too old and confused if there are too many things on screen :P

Well, the likely scenario is Sony let one of the CPU core to run PhysX.

As for price increase, unlikely, since Xbox 360, PS3, and Wii all have PhysX (Wii doesn't employ Nvidia GPU).

meh

the only time physx has really impressed me was in mirror's edge. it's not anything too special from what I've seen aside from that.

Kinda makes you wonder why people get their panties in a bunch when PhysX chips are mounted even on budget cards and do no greatly inflate their price. This doesn't mean that the PS4 will magically become expensive.

It does make you wonder though - AMD APU and NVidia technology in one box... interesting.

The reason PhysX does not inflate the price of GPUs is because it runs on top of the already existing GPU cores. There haven't been a dedicated PPU unit available for a couple of years now because Nvidia focused on making said ability possible on all their newer GPUs instead.

I was just underlining the fact that the fountain of tears this causes and will continue to cause is unwarranted, but an explaination for those who think this will make the console more expensive is always welcome. ;)

yall im torn... ive been hacking away at tales of phantasia GBA (the USA version) and have so many documents of reverse engineering i've done
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I just found out that the EU version is better in literally every way, better sound quality, better lighting, and there's even a patch someone made to make the text look nicer
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
Do I restart now using what i've learned on the EU version since it's a better overall experience? or do I continue with the US version since that is what ive been using, and if someone decides to play my hack, it would most likely be that version?
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
@TwoSpikedHands, I'll preface this with the fact that I know nothing about the game, but, I think it depends on what your goals are. Are you trying to make a definitive version of the game? You may want to refocus your efforts on the EU version then. Or, are you trying to make a better US version? In which case, the only way to make a better US version is to keep on plugging away at that one ;)
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
I'm not familiar with the technicalities of the differences between the two versions, but I'm wondering if at least some of those differences are things that you could port over to the US version in your patch without having to include copyrighted assets from the EU version
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
@Sicklyboy I am wanting to fully change the game and bend it to my will lol. I would like to eventually have the ability to add more characters, enemies, even have a completely different story if i wanted. I already have the ability to change the tilemaps in the US version, so I can basically make my own map and warp to it in game - so I'm pretty far into it!
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I really would like to make a hack that I would enjoy playing, and maybe other people would too. swapping to the EU version would also mean my US friends could not legally play it
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I am definitely considering porting over some of the EU features without using the actual ROM itself, tbh that would probably be the best way to go about it... but i'm sad that the voice acting is so.... not good on the US version. May not be a way around that though
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
    I appreciate the insight!
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
@TwoSpikedHands just switch, all the knowledge you learned still applies and most of the code and assets should be the same anyway
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
    and realistically they wouldn't

be able to play it legally anyway since they need a ROM and they probably don't have the means to dump it themselves

why the shit does the shitbox randomly insert newlines in my messages

It does that when I edit a post.

do y'all think having an sd card that has a write speed of 700kb/s is a bad idea?

  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
@Karma177 that sd card is 100% faulty so yes, its a bad idea

even the slowest non-sdhc sd cards are a few MB/s
