- PRE-REQUISITES -

0) A FAT32 formatted USB drive

Most low-capacity USB drives are already FAT32 formatted. If your's isn't, right click on the drive letter of your usb(eg: E:\) and click on Format. Choose FAT32 and Quick Format it.

1) OFW 3.55(if you don't already have it)

BASE

This is currently the best backup manager.

- PROCEDURE -
- PC STUFF -

STEP 0: CREATING A CUSTOM FIRMWARE
Automatic Patching:

1) Create a new folder on your desktop and call it 'CFWM'. If you downloaded OFW 3.55 earlier, skip step 3 and create a new folder inside this folder called 'Original_3.55_FW'. Copy the PS3UPDAT.PUP to this folder.

2) Extract the .exe from inside the CFWM archive to this folder.

3) Now, open the .exe and choose 'Download 3.55 OFW'.

4) After it has finished, choose any CFW from the 3.55 section and click on Create Custom Firmware 3.55.

NOTE: I recommend Kmeaw's 3.55 CFW.

Manual patching:(by Cyan)

1) Download CFWM v1.5 Full version (+batch by Cyan) [152MB]. and create a new folder on your desktop and call it 'CFWM'. Now, extract everything from that archive to this folder.

2) Place the downloaded OFW 3.55 in 'Original_3.55_FW' folder (or OFW 3.41 in 'Original_3.41_FW' folder).

3) Double click on the Batch file corresponding to the cfw you want to create (ex. Kmeaw_3.55.bat) and follow the instructions. Verify that both MD5 hashes are matching at the end of the process.

4) The patched cfw is now available in newly created folder named after the cfw you chose.

STEP 1: TRANSFERRING EVERYTHING TO THE USB DRIVE

Okay, now lets start transferring the CFW and the Backup Manager to the USB drive.

1) On the root of your USB drive, create a new folder called 'PS3'. Now inside 'PS3' create another folder called 'UPDATE'.

2) Go to the 'CFWM' folder and now go to the folder of your chosen CFW.

3) Find the PS3UPDAT.PUP file and copy it to the 'UPDATE' folder which we created.

4) Open the multiMAN archive.

5) Extract multiMAN WT.pkg, USB.CFG and options_default.ini to root of your USB drive.

- PS3 STUFF -

STEP 1: INSTALLING KMEAW CFW

1) In the XMB, go to Settings -> System Update.

2) Now select Update Via Storage Media.

3) A message will pop-up.

4) Press 'X'.

5) It should install successfully. If you get any errors, try installing it using Recovery Mode.

STEP 2: INSTALLING MULTIMAN BACKUP MANAGER

1) In the XMB go to Game -> Install Package Files.

2) Select MultiMAN and install it.

3) If you want to play games with Kmeaw cfw, you need to install this using the 'Install Package Files' option in the Game section of the XMB.

STEP 3: ENABLING NTFS ON MULTIMAN (OPTIONAL)

[title: ENABLING NTFS ON MULTIMAN]

1) Plug your external hdd into your PC and download this.

2) Install usbview and open it.

3) Grab the vendor id and the product id.

4) Now create a new notepad file and put this in 0xVNID:0xPRID:V where VNID is the vendor id and PRID is the product id and V is the number of volumes.

5) Now save it as USB.CFG and copy it over to the root of your USB Drive. If it asks you to replace it, do so.

6) Now download Awesome File Manager and install it on your PS3.

7) Run it and browse to /dev_hdd0/game/BLES80608/USRDIR

8) On the other side you should find a directory that has "USB" in it, the inside directory should have your "USB" file.

9) Highlight it and press O to copy it into MultiMAN USRDIR.

10) Now go back to multiMAN and press Start + /\.

11) The NTFS driver should be activated now.

NOTE: Currently you can only copy from an external NTFS hdd to your internal hdd. Nothing more, nothing less.

GUIDE 2: CONNECTING TO PSN

THIS DOES NOT WORK AS OF 3/18/2011. FOR MORE INFO, GO HERE.

1) TEAM REBUG'S 3.60 SPOOFER

icon29.gif
Visit Team Rebug website to download a list of URLs

Select a link from the provided list in the text file to download the installer.

- PROCEDURE -
INSTALLING TEAM REBUG'S 3.60 SPOOFER

1) Extract 3.60_Version_Spoofer.pkg from the archive you downloaded to the root of your USB drive.

2) Plug it in to your PS3

3) In the XMB go to Game -> Install Package Files.

4) Select 3.60 Version Spoofer

5) Once loaded Press the 'X' button to install. It will take about 15-45 seconds.

6) When it prompts for a reboot, do so.

STEP 2: INSTALLING FUCK PSN (OPTIONAL. USE THIS FOR SPOOFING YOUR CONSOLE ID).

1) Download dev_blind.pkg, fuckPsn-v0.6.exe and CA27.cer from here. Copy dev_pkg and openps3ftp.pkg from the OpenPs3Ftp archive to the root of your USB Drive.

2) On your desktop, create a new folder. Let's call it Fuck PSN.

3) Copy CA27.cer and the fuckPsn-v0.6.exe file to this folder.

4) Now download an FTP server. I personally use FileZilla.

5) Install it.

6) Now plug-in your USB Drive into your PS3.

7) In the XMB, go to Install Package Files and install dev_blind and OpenPS3FTP.

8) Go to Game and launch dev_blind to mount the flash as writable

9) Now on your PS3 run OpenPS3Ftp and on your PC run Filezilla or whichever FTP server you use.

10) Go to FileZilla and enter root as the username and openbox as the password.

11) Now using FileZilla go to /dev_blind/data /cert

12) Rename CA27.cer to CA27.cer.bak

13) Now copy over the CA27.cer from the FuckPSN directory that we created earlier to /dev_blind/data/cert

14) Now change your PS3's primary and secondary dns servers to your PS3's IP. If you don't know how to change the DNS servers look here.

15) After you're done changing the DNS servers, reboot your PS3 and launch FuckPSN.exe from the folder we created earlier.

16) You can now connect to PSN.

-END OF GUIDES-

F.A.Q.(by Cyan)

Main questions

Q. Can I use burnt Bluray discs to play games?
A. No. Only Internal and External HDD is working with backup managers.

Q. I updated past 3.55, is there any way to get the 3.55 custom firmware from there?
A. No. There's no way to downgrade from 3.56+ firmware yet using a software method. Though, there is a way to downgrade some FAT PS3 involving Infectus modchip.

Q. I'm on 3.50 or bellow. Do I need to install the Official Firmware 3.55 first?
A. Even if installing a cfw3.55 over an old fw should work, it's recommended that you update your PS3 to the same Official Firmware as the cfw you want to install first to avoid bricking your console.

Q. I'm on 3.41 or bellow and don't want to update to 3.55, do I really need to install 3.55 to use a cfw?
A. No, you can install Hermes cfw 3.41 (please update to ofw 3.41v2 first) and follow the guide the same way. Just don't install the Version Spoofer from Team Rebug (It only works on 3.55).

Q. I'm already using a cfw but I want to change for Kmeaw 3.55
A. First re-install the ofw 3.55 over your current one, then follow the guide again.

Q. How big should be my USB drive just to install it, not to play back ups?
A. Around 200mb.

Q. Where can I find all previous Official Firmware and their MD5 hash ?
A. Sony removed previous firmwares from their servers when the first jailbreak method appeared. You can still find remaining links and all the informations here.

CFWM

Q. The program doesn't start.
A. You need .Net framework 4.0.

Q. Where can I find .net4.0 ?
A. Here

Q. I don't want to install .Net4.0. How can I still patch the firmware?
A. You can use bspatch program to patch the firmware manually. Follow the manual patching method in the Guide.

PSN

Q. Can Sony ban my PSN account?
A. Yes, as Sony can't ban your Console ID, they can ban your account. But you can always create a new account, while unbanning the PS3 itself will be harder.

Q. Can I play online with all games?
A. You can't play online anymore. You need the 3.62+ official firmware to connect to PSN.

Q. FuckPSN is not working, what can I do?
A. You need .net Framework 3.5, and if you are using a firewall you need to open these ports : 53 UDP, 80 TCP and 443 TCP. You may need to close Skype.

Multiman :

Q. When I press start+triangle to enable NTFS it freezes
A. Your NTFS partition needs to be primary and active.

I myself don't have a ps3 but a few friends do and my son is thinking of getting one.

I had a look through the guide and think it is very good, not too long, not too short and options with explanations for a few of the steps.

Not owning a ps3 makes me a n00b, and as a ps3 n00b I think this guide would 110% do me if anyone I know wants me to mod theirs, so thanks Zorua for taking time to write the guide
biggrin.gif

If I could criticise anything about it, or make a suggestion to help it become better I would add a description of what the guide will do at the top of it.
For example...

Follow this guide to
- Run Homebrew on a ps3
- Run backup games from XXX
- etc

Again, thanks to the auther and everyone that has helped

Thank for your comment

The sticky should be granted, I'm waiting for a little changes first, and possibly a quick guide covering how to launch homebrews and use games managers.

There has been a lot of different methods to jailbreak the PS3 since September, it's starting to be easier now with custom firmware, but still each custom firmware has its own way to do it, especially geohot's cfw which need to sign every homebrew.

I agree with the little comments and summary at the beginning of the post. explaining what will achieve this guide, for what console or firmware, etc.

Maybe we could also list few homebrews alongside the guide to let users test what's been done so far. Emulators, games and applications.
Well, at least until there's more thread about homebrews. the PS3 section is not very active for the moment, I think the users follow other websites as there's not a lot of regular PS3 scene information here, but we have few users who are well informed and can answer all the questions.

Ok first of all thanks for the guide, looks really easy to install.

I have 3 PS3 at home, I use 2 fat for online gameplay and I'm saving a slim one for jailbreaking, the slim one has a really really old firmware so I just have to update it to 3.55 and then install the CFW to play backup games.

Now I don't care about PSN or going online using the slim so after I install the CFW I'm done with it right?

No, after the CFW you also have to install the backup manager(if you want to play backups).

oh yeah I missed that step

update 3.55 ofw, install CFW , install back up manager and that's it.

I'm going to use multiman since is the one you recommend, hopefully it can run all the games I have.

will multiman be able to run games from external hard drive?

by the way, multiman CFW link was removed.

Yes, just use the NTFS tutorial part. Also, I've fixed the link and updated a lot of stuff.

This might sound like a dumb question but can I download kmeaw from somewhere else instead of using custom firmware maker because it's taking way too long.

the cfw kmeaw I downloaded from ps3hacks is 178.873.574kb I'm pretty sure is the latest, patched.

also where it says: "If you want to play games with Kmeaw cfw, you need to run this (lv2_v9.pkg) before starting MultiMAN."

I move that pkg file to the root of the usb? and I have to run it before multiman everytime I want to run a backup?

@Alex25 :
You can download it from somewhere else, as long as you are sure it's the correct file.
GBATemp can't provide links to already patched Custom Firmware, that's why the cfw are distributed in a patch form.
There are 2 way to apply the patch on the original firmwares to create the cfw : manually using command line, or using a GUI program (which is what CFWM does).

About the lv2_v9.pkg, you "install" it from the "Install Package".
Then, you don't "iinstall" it anymore, you just locate the icon on your xmb and run it each time before loading MultiMan.
If you don't want to run it every time, search for bdemu.pkg, which install the payload inside Multiman so it is loaded automatically, instead of an external one.

@Zorua :

I read the entire (new) guide and I still have a lot of complains (not against you, it's against the content).
I'm explaining it below. This is only my point of view, if you think of something better I'm all for it too, I'm maybe a little too exigent but I care for the noob reading the guide. I like when all steps are well explained and working for everybody, not only for users already in the PS3 scene.

Guide 1, pre 1 :
----------------
Still no MD5 checksum of the firmware, to prevent users to install a wrong one.
I know there's a link, but users could already have the firmware on their computer and won't need to re-download it, so they can check its integrity.

Note : if the user use your link to download 3.55, don't ask the user to download it again for the cfwm tutorial. say that he can move the file to the cfwm folder.
Or give cfwm first, and say that the user can download the ofw with it.

Note : Maybe give the possibility to install CFW for 3.41 ?
I think your guide could cover it to satisfied most users.
Just adding a link and explaining that cfw 3.41 is also a possibility, but that you recommend users to use 3.55 should be fine.
(Though, a lot of users are still using 3.41 and want to keep it, like myself.)

Guide 1, pre 2 :
----------------

Maybe rename the title to "CFWM : Custom Firmware Maker"; or only "Custom Firmware Maker".
CFWM 1.5 Final is available, but you linked to version 1.3
The 1.5 link on psgroove.com is not available anymore, but I gave you the official website with a link.
(Don't hotlink to their download, create a new link on a file hoster).
I tried to unpack the 1.5 but I got an error with Waninkoko3.55 v2 file.
I should try to find the patch for this cfw elsewhere.

You didn't specified that it needs .net framework 4, and only works on Windows,
But that a manual patching method will be provided for users without the required environment.
Then, on the Guide1, Step0, you could create another [ p= ] box with "manual method"
So the step0 will have "automatic patching method" box and "manual patching method" box.

Guide 1, PC Stuff, step1, point 3 :
--------------------------
3) Find the PS3UPDAT.PUP file and extract it to the 'UPDATE' folder which we created.
I think it's "copy" and not "extract".

Guide 1, PC Stuff, step1, point 4 & 5 :
-----------------------------
Covering Multiman here is fine I guess, until the guide have a "GUIDE3 - Game Manager"

Guide 1, PS3 Stuff, Step2 & 3:
------------------------------
Same as above, we could put it in "Guide 3"

Guide 2, predecure, Step2, point 1 :
------------------------------------
1) Extract dev_blind.pkg from the Fuck PSN archive and openps3ftp.pkg

There's no dev_blind.pkg in your fuckPSN0.6 archive. (only CA27.cer, the .exe and an icon file)
Don't include it in the archive unless you are creating a full package for the entire tutorial.
instead, just link to a dev_blind.pkg file to download.

point 9 and 10 don't explain how to setup the PS3 network, nor to "connect" to PS3. you just give the log/pass.
It's not very noob friendly, they have to understand that you tell them to connect to the PS3 using the PS3 IP. Nowhere you tell where to find that IP.

But, you asked me to describe the ftp part, so I'll see what I can do.
I thought about adding a quick header information (just before GUIDE1), something like that :
Guide objectives :
- Install Custom Firmware 3.55
- Connect to PSN (optional step)
- Install and launch Homebrews
- Transfer files between Computer/PS3
- Play games with managers

or use a sentence explaining all these objectives.

4) Now create a new notepad file and put this in 0xVNID:0xPRID:V where VNID is the vendor id and PRID is the product id and V is the number of volumes.

I'm in this step now and I'm confused in the last part, usbview does not say anything about volumes....

I know this step is optional but I guess I need it to transfer ps3 games from my external hdd to the ps3

PS: Thanks Cyan for helping me in your last post.

I think volume either refer to the USB port you are connecting your drive (most unlikely), or the partition you want to read on your hard drive (most likely
biggrin.gif
).

Note : the hexadecimal letters will have to be written in lowercase, or it won't work.

Note 2 : You can skip step 5 to 9 if you want to use FTP instead of USB+awesome file manager.
I think it's easier using the FTP (and multiman include an FTP server which auto-start. use an FTP client (such as FlashFXP or FileZilla) and connect to the IP address written in Multiman using "anonymous" connection, or no log/pass). browse to /dev_hdd0/game/BLES80608/USRDIR and upload USB.CFG here.
Restart multiman and then use Start+triangle to enable ntfs reading (only used to copy from external to internal, you can't play from ntfs).

Hi Cyan!

First of all, thanks for the sticky!
I've fixed most of the stuff. Need to work a bit more on it. I will be doing it today.
Tell me what you think.
Also, thanks for your suggestions! I really do appreciate it!

You may want to add that there's a custom firmware that doesn't need fuck psn.

You mean PS3ITA CFW? I didn't add it because it doesn't have CONSOLE ID Spoofing and so it poses a possible ban risk.

You may want to add that there's a custom firmware that doesn't need fuck psn.

You mean PS3ITA CFW? I didn't add it because it doesn't have CONSOLE ID Spoofing and so it poses a possible ban risk.
ah, ok I didn't know that.

I thought about adding a little FAQ at the end of the guide.
here what I thought about :

F.A.Q.

Main questions
Q. I updated to 3.60 is there any way to get the 3.55 custom firmware from there?
A. No. There's no way to downgrade from 3.56 or 3.60 firmware yet.

A. >>link to .net 4 goes here

Will you be adding the Team Rebug v3.60 spoofer in the future?

I'm working on it. It should be updated with 3.60 spoofer instructions in about an hour.

And thanks.

EDIT: Just finished updating with 3.60 instructions. I've also added the latest MultiMAN.

@Cyan, thanks for the FAQ! I'll add it in a while!
