someone should make a guide for this thing. >> including downgrading.
Downgrading is as easy as installing a firmware. Suppose you are on 4.11 DEX. You can just grab the 3.55 Downgrade DEX from the ps3dev wiki and install it like any normal firmware and you get downgraded.
You have to be on 3.55 initially to do this hack though. After you've converted to DEX you can upgrade and downgrade freely.

btw would there be a simple way to swap back and forth from dev and plain?
idk haven't tried. With this hack, you change your PS3's eEID to mark it as a Dev console so DEX firmwares install on it. idk if CEX(normal) firmwares can be installed on DEX consoles.
Guess reflashing your original NOR dump will make it CEX again. Not sure.

Edit: Here is a guide written by bleh at ps3hax. It is relatively noob friendly guide available atm.
For NOR(slim and a few phat) consoles only. Proceed with extreme caution. I'm not responsible for any damage you do to your console. Also remember that you'll lose BluRay video disc playback if you do this.

I would do this, but I don't want to brick my PS3. I wonder what features are available on a Dev PS3.

umm ... no thank you. I'll just wait for something better to come along (if it ever does). I don't like loosing so much functionality to play homebrew.
I never used the PS3 as a bluray player, so that doesn't concern me. BD playback can be fixed in 3.55 DEX but not on the later DEX firmwares from what I hear. And this is not for homebrew only. Backups (even the new 3.6+ ones) run just fine if you use ps3gen.
Noob friendly solutions should come. I remember QA flagging used to need linux when it first came out. Now we can do that from a homebrew app.

i think temp is quite slow when it comes to ps3 news. i dont mean the fact the news was posted late but rather the awareness of ps3 scenes news, Must be bcz the ps3 is let down many ppl in terms of being hacked but hopefully in this year we might see something interesting.

Woah wait!

So this means I can hack my PS3? :D I am on the latest firmware(the one which fixed something with a headset I believe)

What do I need?(Tools?) If someone can specify the tools I need, then I might be able to hack the stuff.

By the way, I can't downgrade my PS3 to a lower firmware then I came with right?(There is a tool to check it your lowest firmware, I am certain of that.)

AFAIK you need to be on 3.55 first to change your ps3 into a de machine.

Yeah I understand I need to be on 3.55 to hack it, but what tools do I as normal average guy need to make my ps3 a dev console to downgrade it?

Like a Progskeet, or some other NAND reader/writer. Not sure if the E3 Flasher would work, I think it requires you to be on a certain CFW and whatnot. Definitely liking this breakthrough. Planning on downgrading my NAND Phat PS3 if I can get it running, and then wait for the instructions on how to do it on a NAND console.

Tools for NAND consoles have been released too.

Oh have they? What are they called? Any of them solderless?

lol you don't need any hardware for this hack if you're on 3.55. It's all done through linux.

Oh no, I'm aware of that. I mean to downgrade a console on a higher firmware than 3.55, to 3.55 in order to perform this hack of converting it to a Dev unit.
