How about the people who do not care about online or DLC, people who just want the games or homebrew?
I'm talking about me, it's want I want.

This is what my 'friend' has and what i'm used to

He would have much more, but he's out of HDD space. He's going to get a 1TB drive soon though to transfer all the rest of the content from his PC.

I like those arcade type quickie games. Being old, I don't have the attention span for longer games.

Because these console can't connect to PSN, you can't legally purchase the DLC or PSN content either.

All I have to say is they said the same thing about the psp and look how wrong they where. I don't care how many posts I see saying it can't be done I'm sticking to 3.41 untill something new comes along, I'm patient. All I read for years was how the ps3 wasn't hackable look what happened now? Same thing happens every time something gets blocked "OMG WE ARE DOOMED" attitude. I'm no hacker but I know one thing, nothing is unhackable.

Hermes left the scene for a product stealing his trademark without authority..Translated from Spanish..google

Selling their clones and seize whatever they want, I happened to keep the riffraff and although I feel for others, here ended my contribution to the scene of PS3.

Kind of unfortunate, I guess. Let's hope it's not this way with the 3DS.
I was surprised that something like this was ever found in all honesty. I thought the PS3 was bulletproof.

In modern consoles, aside from the laughable Wii, the actual security architecture has never been compromised. For the xbox360 the weakest link was the use of the DVD drive, thus most attack vectors use it. With the PS3 they exploited an existing feature within the PS3 itself. In neither case was the actual hypervisor architecture ever exploited. The PS3 took longer since basically all parts of the system were pretty well secured so you couldn't, until recently, even look at what the system did. I think having access to 3.41 is going to be interesting in that it'll give us insight into some of the inner workings of the architecture. Technically it's a fascinating thing.

3.42 isn't going to be cracked unless we get some kind of global distributed computing to brute force the master key, or the key gets leaked somehow. Even a distributed effort is probably futile though, as the keyspace is so large.

Nope. Source

We have discovered a vulnerability in the Xbox 360 hypervisor that allows
privilege escalation into hypervisor mode. Together with a method to
inject data into non-privileged memory areas, this vulnerability allows
an attacker with physical access to an Xbox 360 to run arbitrary code
such as alternative operating systems with full privileges and full
hardware access.

An exploit in the hypervisor is used, that got patched but they did a poor job of patching it. http://free60.git.sourceforge.net/git/gitw...ack.txt;hb=HEAD. Like the PS3, it has an IBM CPU with E-Fuses. MS blowing the E-Fuses put paid to the exploit, that was over a year ago and no new way of running unsigned code has been discovered. Presumably the PS3's 3.42 update went on an E-Fuse blowing rampage, you have to assume Sony have stopped this in it's tracks.

Nintendo has gotten people used to finding another exploit as soon as one is fixed, don't expect the same from the PS3.

A flashed drive just allows to you play backup discs, nothing else. There are no attack vectors which use the DVD Drive.

While I don't think newer systems will be hackable, I do believe in CFW. In fact CFW would be far better than the exploit.

I also believe the PS3 has been hacked before, just that the groups involved didn't send out demo's before saying they had a hacking method. If we've seen anything in the last 4 weeks, it's that Sony is insane. I don't put anything past them, including hiring thugs to beat down a door and kill some people.

I only see two possible CFWs being written for the PS3.

1 - One to make the jailbreak effect permanent so you don't need a USB device each time you power on.

2 - One made by glory-seeking kids that just change a couple default values/colors/graphics and the firmware version, then call it custom.

I say this because I can't think of anything reasonable that would be done with a CFW that's not already possible.

Backups?
Homebrew?
Remote file management?
Web browsing?
Media playing?

All can be done right now, no CFW needed.

Now of course there's possible improvements for built-in functions of the GameOS (such as the video player), but none of those warrant a CFW being made specifically for them, people would much rather port a program over from the PC and have much more free reign and much less risk.

geohot anyone? that guy is a real dork
no, i'm talking stuff like that "tsz" or whatever cfw that was released being m33 with some values changed and prxs included.

what did geohot do? god i hate having geohot conversations because nobody knows shit about him.
read the wikipedia article on him before you reply.

i'd like the sort of stuff i got with my psp cfw. pspstate and cwcheat. and let's not forget, game categories!

it's like having the backup filemanage right in the menu. any one who has a hacked psp knows what i'm talking about. i have 4 categories, psp games, ps1 games, emulators, utilities!

trust me, cfw is where the fun is at.

dax did some wicked stuff with the psp... now someone should step up to the plate and deliver something as good for the ps3... only time will tell i guess...

oh yeah, plugin ability, forgot the ps3 most likely doesn't have that right now.

i actually laughed at the article, quite funny!

hey look all games (right now, except the overhyped call of duty or whatever fps it is) are playable...

75% is junk? well 75% of wii games are junk, 75% of xbox360 are junk... but hey

i bought a ps3 and a jailbreak device (for 30€), total spent? 300€!

i don't care about dlc or psn, i just wanna play the games that get released in disc, me and tons of other users.

the article is indeed wrong and was obviously someone trying to make everyone "update" by admitting defeat.

no one can predict the future of what may happen... but is it looking gloomy for the ps3? no. is it looking gloomy for the "scene"? no.

just my two cents.

i agree, the scene has never been more alive. it's like saying the dragons dead because a bunch of the fires were put out in the village. a few people have been sued and a few shops can't sell the device anymore.

all those shops were in countries that were bought out long ago by the corporations here in america. there's a reason tpb is still in operation. it's in a country that dosen't involve itself in the political bull crap of commerce. even the nazi party mostly left them alone. a fair chunk of the world still laughs at the usa and more recently obama who is trying incredibly hard to appease the corporations rather than the people.

--- calms down ---

sorry about that. tired of all the political commercials talking about spending more when i owe 80,000$ in school loans. they want my vote, make it legal to bankrupt on unrealistic school loans and destroy all for-profit schools.
