No it's not true.
There was a bug in 3.56, which causes problems with new hdd's, but it's already fixed.

There are 2 versions of 3.56, the first one bricked the PS3 if you used a different HDD.
Sony released a 3.56 updated version soon after that.
Sony already did the same mistake with 3.41, and they released 3.41 v2 soon after that mistake too.

You can update to Kmeaw 3.55 without problem for your HDD compatibility.

as long as you download the latest firmware update (3.60), you should be ok. as stated above, there was a bug in 3.56 v1 that could potentially "brick" your ps3 if you attempted to install it to a brand new hdd that was freshly formatted (eg. did not already contain an early firmware version). the bug was fixed in 3.56 v2, however it did not help those with an already bricked ps3

I just followed Zorua's guide last week so now that I can play any game I want I need more space that's why I want to replace the hdd for the one I have on my laptop which is 500gb

I guess I'll be ok with updating my ps3 since I'm in 3.55

Yep, there shouldn't be any problems with 3.55

the ps3 is not giving me any option to format the hard drive.

It's asking me to connect a usb drive with a firmware version of 3.55 or higher and then press start+select

does this mean I have to install ofw 3.55 and then do the hacking process again?

You need to install OFW initially on a new drive, yes.

thanks Twinretro, I was waiting for a quick reply.

EDIT: I backed up my cfw before changing hard drives, will there be a problem if after installing ofw I restore my last cfw?

ok I'm finally done with everything.

What I did was

Backed up my data
I switched hard drives
I installed OFW 3.55 then formatted hdd
I upgraded to kmeaw's cfw 3.55
I used the restore utility and recovered all my data and saved games.

i put the official 3.55 on new hard drive and then I installed cfw kmeaw 3.55 in recovery mode

after all of that I used the restore option to restore all my saved data
