To use my 64gb SD card on my 3DS, I have to format it to exFAT. However, when it is in this format, I can't have any files in it larger than 4gb or I get an error message ("file is too large for destination file system"). Pokemon UM is 4.1gb so I need the SD card to be exFAT for it to work but I need it to be NFTS to put Pokemon UM on it. What do?

If the problem is just with installing this one single file then you can install it over the local network from your computer instead of putting it on the SD card first and then installing it.

How do I do that?

You have to use FAT32 even for a large SD card. Windows removed the ability to format large (>32 GB) volumes in FAT32 format several years ago but you can still do it with third party programs.

Use guiformat (http://www.ridgecrop.demon.co.uk/index.htm?guiformat.htm) to format your SD card in FAT32.

FAT32 and exFAT file size limit is 4gb, that's my problem.

I believe you mean FAT32 and not exFAT. I remember and I still have Ultra Sun installed since a while with FBI and it was 3.4GB, anyways try using custom-install.

Thanks, going to try this now. Tutorial I'm using linked below on the off chance someone else has this problem.

It is normally not needed, there are no legit Game (Free "download" ...) that is bigger than 4 GB.

You can not use exFat.
You can not use NTFS

for Custom Firmware.

Thank you.:)

What could be in the ROM that takes it from 3.6GB (normal Pokemon UM size) to 4.1GB? I know the ROM works because I've installed it using a different SD card before.

Ultra Moon is 3.45 GB (3,708,268,544 bytes) so it falls within the fat32 limit, IDK why yours is larger but you might want to find another one.
In fact im not sure if there are any games that are over 4GB.

Either way setting up custom install is a good idea just for install speed alone.

Not sure where I got it from either but it works since I've installed it before on a different SD card. I've found a 3.5gb one now though, thanks :)

@sparkes Remember that a 3DS/2DS with CFW (like Luma) only accepts .CIA installable files (.3DS/.3DZ roms are not compatible, only with 3DS mode flashcards).

Perharps that's your problem
