So I downgraded today and got the CFW working and everything, but I found out I need to already have a demo or game already installed for the DevMenu to be installed. Am I screwed? I can't connect to the store to download anything.

Yeah, it's just so hard to install DevMenu, after that it's smooth sailing after that.

I've already installed the CFW to 3 Classic 3DS units (Two Japanese and one US unit). It's always the DevMenu part.

Lucky For you
after installing it. I felt so happy. LOL I think there are certain conditions to be met, and even one condition will be missed.. you will get the failed to connect error.

is devmenu only for cfw? i remember seeing it launcher in the n3ds video, how would i go about doing this on the 2DS?
no.. gateway user can also DevMenu. its an application to install .cia files and File organizer for the 3ds. I dont know if 2ds is supported with CFW though

Certain homebrew also have CIA files. It's really up to the homebrew maker to have a CIA version though.

Alright so I finally got everything working! But I've been thinking. Is there any real advantage to the CFW over Gateway? As I play around with the CFW some more, I'm finding more problems with it. For example, playing recent games can be a huge pain. I know there's ways to get emunand updated or whatever to the latest firmware on the CFW, but it's a huge hassle. That said, is it just easier to get a Gateway at this point?

You don't need the cfw if you have a Gateway (except if you want to extract your non 6.X retail cartdrige saves). The gateway is already compatible with devmenu/BigBlueMenu.

yup.. I dont see what's the reason of people doing a tutorial "Installing CFW with Gateway" and people actually CFW their 3ds , I mean... what the hell will you do on CFW if you have a gateway??
